Volleyball Splits Second Day of South Central Classic

Senior Noelle Cope tallied 21 kills for the Lady Tigers in the second day of the South Central Classic.

ADA – The East Central University volleyball team picked up its first win of the season after splitting its two matches in the second day of the South Central Classic at the Kerr Activities Center.  The Lady Tigers (1-5) first fell to Cameron, 1-3 (15-25, 25-23, 19-25, 20-25), and then defeated Mid-America Christian, 3-0 (25-16, 26-12, 25-15).

ECU saw strong hitting performances from the majority of the team for the day, hitting .341 as a team and allowing its opponents to hit a just a .174 mark.  Senior Noelle Cope led the team in kills, with 21, and added a .415 (21k-4e-41ta) hitting percentage.

Cope was one of five Lady Tigers with double-digit kills for the day, with senior Ashley Williams adding 18, senior Danielle Essix and sophomore Hayley Gerken tallying 16 and sophomore Sydney Eggers garnering 10.

The Lady Tigers will remain at home for a match against St. Gregory's, Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Kerr Activities Center.

ECU 3, Mid-America Christian 0
Noelle Cope led a strong group of offense, with 11 kills and a .556 (11k-1e-18ta) hitting percentage.  She tallied her first double-double of the season by adding 10 digs.

The teams battled through three early ties in the opening set, but an ECU 8-1 run gave the Lady Tigers an 11-5 lead.  ECU then kept the Evangels to just one point at-a-time the rest of the set and earned the 25-16 win.

The Lady Tigers wasted no time going ahead in the second set, with a 4-1 advantage.  ECU added a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to pull away and took the set, 25-12.

The final set was all ECU, as they led from start to finish.  The Lady Tigers used several three or four-point runs through the set and picked up the sweep with a 25-15 win.

Cameron 3, ECU 1
The Lady Tigers saw a double-double from senior Jessica Wilkinson, who tallied 25 assists and 10 digs.  ECU also saw double-digit kill performances from seniors Ashley Williams (11) and Noelle Cope (10).

In the opening set, Cameron (3-4) took an early 3-7 advantage and never allowed the Lady Tigers to score more than two-straight points through the set on the way to a 15-25 win.

The second set was a much closer battle, with eight tie scores and three lead changes.  The final tie came late in the set at 21-all.  ECU used a 3-0 run to take a key 23-21 lead.  The teams then traded points the rest of the set, but the advantage allowed the Lady Tigers to earn a 25-23 win.

The battle continued into the third set, with seven ties and two lead changes. However, the battle was in the beginning of the set, with the final tie at 13-all.  The Aggies used a 7-4 run to take a 17-21 lead and control of the set on their way to a 19-25 win.

The final set was again close at the start with five tie scores before the teams reached double-digits on the scoreboard.  After the score was knotted at seven, Cameron went on a 5-1 run to take control and used the advantage to earn a 20-25 win.
