Volleyball Earns Sweep of Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, ARK. – The East Central University volleyball team picked up their first Great American Conference win of the 2014 season with a 3-0 sweep (28-26, 25-17, 30-28) of Henderson State on the road.

The Tigers (4-20, 1-10 GAC) were led by junior Sarah Simpson, who tallied her second-straight double-double and her eighth of the season with 16 kills and 16 digs.  Redshirt freshman Chelsea Stevens added 10 kills, a .500 (10k-2e-16ta) hitting percentage and three digs.

The opening set was a true battle from start to finish, with 17 tie scores, seven lead changes and it took extra points to decide.  No team lead by more than two points the entire set, with the final tie coming at 26-all when ECU recorded a blocking error.  However, freshman Madyson Gill gave the Tigers the lead with a kill and then had a strong serve to help set up Simpson and freshman Mackenzie Davis for a block to give them the two-point advantage needed to win 28-26.

The teams continued the battle at the start of the second set, with ties at two, three and six before the Tigers took control for good.  ECU put together a 12-3 run to gain a 17-9 lead.  That was all the momentum they needed, as they went on to earn a 17-25 win.

The final set was much like the first, with 11 ties, seven lead changes and again extra points needed to get a decision.  Both teams traded serves and runs at the beginning of the set, but it was a 7-1 run by the Reddies (3-20, 0-11 GAC) that pushed them ahead 13-11.

HSU held onto the advantage until late in the set, when the Tigers used a 4-1 run to tie the set at 22.  The battle resumed and again it was the Tigers who came out on top.  ECU used a 3-0 run on a kill by junior Hayley Gerken, a service ace from sophomore Madison Seiler and a kill from Simpson to earn the set and match victory.

The Tigers will now return home to host Southwestern Oklahoma State, Tuesday, Oct. 21 for the annual Pink Out match.  The match is also part of the annual Homecoming activities with the Friday, Oct. 24 match against Northwestern Oklahoma State at Kerr Activities Center.
