Box Score DENTON, TEXAS – The East Central University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2014-15 season, with a 55-64 defeat at Texas Woman's in non-conference action.
The Tigers (4-1, 2-0 GAC) were led by seniors
Dilan Webster and
Erin Walling. Webster garnered 15 points, six rebounds and two steals. Walling added 15 points, two rebounds and two steals. Sophomore
Jalyn Jackson led the team in the rebounding column with seven.
"We didn't come out ready to defend today or adjust to how Texas Woman's was guarding us," said head coach
Matt Cole. "We got in foul trouble in the post and that put more pressure on the guard to make plays, but we were never able to get into a rhythm. We will learn from this and get ready to get back into GAC play next week.
The Pioneers (4-2) opened the game with a 9-0 run and never let go of the lead throughout the game. TWU held the advantage between six to nine points for the first nine minutes before ECU pushed back and cut the deficit to three (13-16), with a 4-0 run over a minute span.
However, that was as close as they got in the stanza, with TWU increased the lead to as many as 18 (17-35) before heading into the break trailing 21-35.
The Pioneers held the advantage in double digits for most of the second half, until 3:14 remained on the clock. The Tigers then used a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four (52-56) over the next minute. However, it was not enough and TWU used an 8-3 run in the final two minutes for the 55-64 win.
The game was close, with the Pioneers earning the win on a few extra made baskets. ECU finished 18-of-60 from the floor, while TWU went 22-of-46.
The Tigers will now prepare for the first home Great American Conference game of the 2014-15 season when they welcome Southwestern Oklahoma State to the Kerr Activities Center, Thursday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
