ALVA, OKLA. – The East Central University women's basketball team came out strong and never trailed in a 63-48 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State in Great American Conference road action.
The Tigers (6-1, 4-0 GAC) were led by senior
Taylor Fischer, who tallied a career-high 19 points and added three rebounds. Fellow senior
Dilan Webster added 15 points, while sophomore
Jalyn Jackson led the team with 10 rebounds and a career-best six assists.
"I thought we did a good job starting the game and controlling the tempo," said head coach
Matt Cole. "We took care of the ball and handled the boards better and knocked down some three point shots that helped keep the game out of reach. Our defense was also really solid today."
ECU hit the first shot of the game and then saw the Rangers (2-5, 1-1 GAC) tie the game on their first possession. However, that was as close as they would get the rest of the game. The Tigers followed with a 5-0 run in the first 2:30.
NWOSU kept the game within one possession until 15 minutes remained to play. ECU then increased the lead to six with a 5-0 run. The game remained close again for the next 7:30 minutes until a 9-0 run pushed the Tigers' lead out to 14 (28-14). ECU kept the pressure up through the end of the half and took a 31-19 lead into the intermission.
The Rangers tried the make a come-back at the start of the second half, but were only able to cut the deficit to eight points in the first four minutes. The Tigers quickly pushed the lead back to double digits and held the lead between nine and 17 points for the rest of the game on the way to the 63-48 win.
ECU had a better shooting day, going 22-of-50 (44%) from the field and 8-of-17 (47.1%) from beyond the arc. The Tigers also held NWOSU to an 18-of-56 (32.1%) shooting percentage and a 3-of-17 mark (17.6%) from beyond the arc.
ECU will have the next week off for finals before returning to the road for a Tuesday, Dec. 16 battle and Texas A&M Commerce at 6 p.m.
