The Series: The Tigers currently own a 48-38-3 record in the all-time series with the Bulldogs after winning four of the last five games. ECU also holds a 26-19 advantage when playing as a conference opponent and a 13-11 lead when playing in Weatherford, Okla.
Scouting Southwestern: The Bulldogs are 2-3 overall after getting shutout in their last two outings. However, SWOSU is 2-0 at home this year.
The Bulldogs are more of a passing team, with 1133 of their 1764 total yards coming in the air. Yet when scoring the difference is much closer at 10 passing TDs to eight rushing. Despite the last two scoreless games, SWOSU has scored 73% of the times they have made it to the red zone (11-of-15). The key difference seems to be field goals, where the Bulldogs are 2-of-4 and have allowed a 10-of-10 mark by the opposition.
Kantrell Hende leads the rushing charge for SWOSU, with 329 yards and four touchdowns. DJ Jones and Derrick Styles are the top targets in the air, having caught three TDs each. Jones has earned a total of 753 all-purpose yards, with 304 receiving, 313 on kick returns, 84 on punt returns and 52 on the rush.
Marc Evans, who missed the last two games, in the main quarterback for the Bulldogs. He has gone 91-of-152 passing, with five interceptions, 1053 yards and 10 touchdowns.
On defense Conner Bays leads the team with 58 (28-30) total tackles, four tackles for loss (7 yards), one interceptions and two pass break ups.
Interception Insanity: The game against Northwestern turned into an interception crazy game, with 10 total interceptions. The Tigers caught seven of those passes for a new Great American Conference single game record. A total of four players claimed an interception for ECU, with three (
Mariano Dillard, Dar-ray Jubilee &
Blake Summers) each netting two.
On A Roll: The Tigers have won their last four games and are the hottest team in the GAC in terms of straight victories. ECU is looking to make that five-straight when they face the Bulldogs, which would mark the first time since 2001 (Oct. 6-Nov. 3) that the Tigers had won five-straight games. ECU has also won five straight in 1930; seven in 1965; eight consecutive games in 1984, 1975 and 1967; and a school record of nine straight in 1965.
Dual Threat: After the opening two games of the year, the Tigers' rushing game has turned up the intensity to make it a dual threat with the passing power of quarterback
Rocky Moore. Through the first two games, ECU averaged 64.0 yards rushing and that has increased to 174.0 yards for the season. Senior
Jamal Hall and freshman
Tre'von Jackson are two key reasons for the increase. Hall is now averaging 75.2 yards per game, while Jackson adds 73.0.
Among the Nation's Best: ECU has had a strong season, allowing them to be ranked in the top-10 in the NCAA in seven statistical categories. The Tigers also have three players ranked in the top-10 in at least one category. Some of the top team categories are interceptions (1st/14), turnovers gained (2nd/21), turnover margin (2nd/2.40), punt return defense (4th/(-1.17)) and passing efficiency (6th/173.67). Senior
Rocky Moore leads the team individually with four top-10 rankings. He is first in passing TDs (21), second in points responsible four (126), fifth in points responsible for per game (25.2) and sixth in passing efficiency (172.5). Junior
David Moore is third in receiving TDs (9) and eighth in yards per reception (24.32), while
Josh Morgan is seventh in fumbles recovered (2).
Rocky's Offensive Power: Senior
Rocky Moore was named the GAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 21 after helping the Tigers to a 69-0 victory over Southern Nazarene.
Moore set the GAC single-game completion percentage record (minimum 20 attempts) by converting 19-of-22 throws against the Crimson Storm. He threw for 253 yards and five touchdowns.
Record Outing: ECU's 69-0 victory over SNU marked the first home shutout since Sept. 25, 2010, when the Tigers claimed a 23-0 victory over Southwestern. The lopsided score also accounted for the second-best margin of victory in school history. The record is an 8-0 win over Bacone in 1939.
#GiveMeMoore: The Tigers have scored 22 of their 29 touchdowns on the pass so far in 2015 and nine of those have been between senior
Rocky Moore and junior
David Moore.
Rocky Moore has had a strong season, averaging 306.8 passing yards per game, while
David Moore ranks in the top-10 in four GAC categories, including second in receiving yards per game.
Bond Special Teams POW: Senior
Spencer Bond has made a strong transition from offense to defense and has earned the GAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the 35-28 win over Henderson State.
Bond punted five times in the Tigers win against the Reddies. He averaged 39.8 yards per punt and had two of his punts end inside the 20-yard line. His longest punt carried 46 yards. The Madill, Okla., also the team's starting safety, ranked second on the team with nine tackles, forced a fumble and intercepted his first pass.
Chasing the Record: Senior
Jameel Whitney finished the 2014 season with the record for the most tackles in a single season (111) and is now working on taking over the career tackle record from Norris Wrenn (2009-12). Wrenn recorded 278 career tackles and Whitney has garnered 256 so far in his career, just 23 off the record mark. Whitney is averaging 10.2 tackles per game this season.
Air Raid: The opening game of the season was a tight battle all the way to the end, but it was a good night for the quarterback and receivers from ECU. Senior quarterback
Rocky Moore recorded 405 yards passing, going 23-of-40. Senior
Nathan Pickett and junior
David Moore were the recipients of a good chuck of those yards, with each garnering over 100 yards. Pickett caught two passes for 129 yards, with a long catch of 82 yards that set up a touchdown.
David Moore caught four passes for 100 yards and scored two TD's. The Tigers had a total of 10 receivers catch at least one pass, with four of those earning over 50 yards.
Preseason Attention: Senior
Travis Hening has started right where he left off in 2014, earning 2015 preseason recognition. The offensive lineman has already been named to the D2Football.com Preseason All-America First Team and to the College Football America Yearbook Starting Lineup. The Yukon, Okla., native is one of two on the D2Football.com preseason team from the GAC and the lone member from the conference on the College Football American Yearbook list.
Up Next: Next time ECU will be at home with a game against Arkansas Tech, Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. The game is slated to be International Student Day to honor the largest class of international students enrolled on campus this year.
