Football Set to Renew Rivalry with Oklahoma Baptist After 75 Years

Brad Davis heads into the end zone for a TD in the 69-0 win over Southern Nazarene.
The East Central University football team will be playing against an opponent Saturday, Sept. 26 that the team has not faced since 1940 when they travel to Shawnee, Okla., to face Oklahoma Baptist at 1 p.m.

Game Notes

The Broadcast: ECU's radio home for Tiger football is Ada's KXFC, 105.5, FM 'The X-Factor'. Mike Manos returns to broadcast the games for his 19th consecutive season. Manos has worked 193 Tiger games since taking over the play-by-play duties in 1997.

The Coverage: Fans who can't be at the game can find links to live stats, live video and the KXFC radio broadcast on ECUTigers.com.  Go to the football schedule page.  You can also download the KXFC radio app for your smartphone by searching '105.5 the X Factor.'

The Series: The series with the Bison has just 17 previous meetings, with all of them taking place before 1941.  OBU currently leads 9-8 in the series and won the last game (7-13) in 1940.  The Tigers won the previous outing in 1939 (6-0).

Scouting Oklahoma Baptist: The Bison are 0-3 on the season, but have had an interesting road to the record.  In the opening weekend of the season, they fell just short with a 19-20 overtime loss to Harding at home.  OBU then suffered a 7-50 loss to Arkansas Tech and rebounded with a closer decision (27-40) at Southeastern.

The Bison have an even attack and defense for the season.  They have 304 yards rushing and 434 passing, while allowing 647 rushing and 752 passing.  However, they have not stopped as many opponents from scoring on the rush, with 10 TD's against them on the ground and three in the air.

Dez Stegall is the head of the offense with a 27-of-48 passing mark, with 212 yards and two interceptions.  Stegall is also the team's leading rusher with 108 yards on 20 attempts.  Derek Serowski is one of three players with over 100 yards receiving, at 131 yards on 15 catches.

Zach Bishop and Jailen Garrett lead the defense for OBU and are first and third in the GAC in tackles per game.  Bishop has 36 (19-17) total tackles and 1.5 TFL.  Garrett adds 33 (18-15) tackles and an interception.

Rocky's Offensive Power: Senior Rocky Moore was named the GAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 21 after helping the Tigers to a 69-0 victory over Southern Nazarene.

Moore set the GAC single-game completion percentage record (minimum 20 attempts) by converting 19-of-22 throws against the Crimson Storm. He threw for 253 yards and five touchdowns.

Record Outing: ECU's 69-0 victory over SNU marked the first home shutout since Sept. 25, 2010, when the Tigers claimed a 23-0 victory over Southwestern.  The lopsided score also accounted for the second-best margin of victory in school history.  The record is an 8-0 win over Bacone in 1939.

Among the Nation's Best: Of the 47 statistical categories that the NCAA keeps team rankings in, the Tigers are ranked in the top-50 in 26 and in the top-25 in 15.  Some of the key areas that ECU is ranked highest are completion percentage (15th-.663), fumbles lost (13th-1), fumbles recovered (8th-5), punt return defense (4th-(-1.75)), sacks allowed (10th-0.33), team passing efficiency (6th-186.37), turnover margin (9th-2.00) and turnovers gained (6th-10).

The Tigers also have nine individual rankings in the top-10.  Josh Morgan is No. 1 in fumbles recovered (2) and Nathan Pickett is No. 3 in yards per receptions (31.83).  Senior Rocky Moore and junior David Moore make up the last of the individual ranks, with Rocky earning four and David two.  Rocky Moore is No. 4 in passing efficiency (183.1), No. 2 in passing TD's (12), No. 4 in points responsible for (72) and No. 9 in yards per pass attempt (9.94).  David Moore is No. 4 in receiving TD's (6) and No. 9 in scoring (12.0).

#GiveMeMoore: The Tigers have scored 13 of their 18 touchdowns on the pass so far in 2015 and six of those have been between senior Rocky Moore and junior David MooreRocky Moore has had a strong start to the season averaging 324.7 passing yards per game, while David Moore ranks in the top-10 in six categories, including second in scoring.

Bond Special Teams POW: Senior Spencer Bond has made a strong transition from offense to defense and has earned the GAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the 35-28 win over Henderson State.

Bond punted five times in the Tigers win against the Reddies. He averaged 39.8 yards per punt and had two of his punts end inside the 20-yard line. His longest punt carried 46 yards. The Madill, Okla., also the team's starting safety, ranked second on the team with nine tackles, forced a fumble and intercepted his first pass.

Chasing the Record:  Senior Jameel Whitney finished the 2014 season with the record for the most tackles in a single season (111) and is now working on taking over the career tackle record from Norris Wrenn (2009-12).  Wrenn recorded 278 career tackles and Whitney has garnered 232 so far in his career, just 45 off the record mark.  Whitney is averaging nine tackles per game this season and if he continues at that pace, he could break the record in the second half of the 2015 season.

Air Raid: The opening game of the season was a tight battle all the way to the end, but it was a good night for the quarterback and receivers from ECU.  Senior quarterback Rocky Moore recorded 405 yards passing, going 23-of-40.  Senior Nathan Pickett and junior David Moore were the recipients of a good chuck of those yards, with each garnering over 100 yards.  Pickett caught two passes for 129 yards, with a long catch of 82 yards that set up a touchdown.  David Moore caught four passes for 100 yards and scored two TD's.  The Tigers had a total of 10 receivers catch at least one pass, with four of those earning over 50 yards.

Preseason Attention: Senior Travis Hening has started right where he left off in 2014, earning 2015 preseason recognition.  The offensive lineman has already been named to the D2Football.com Preseason All-America First Team and to the College Football America Yearbook Starting Lineup.  The Yukon, Okla., native is one of two on the D2Football.com preseason team from the GAC and the lone member from the conference on the College Football American Yearbook list.

Next Time at Koi Ishto Stadium: The Tigers will return to Norris Field for their next game, Saturday, Oct. 3 against Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.  The game is the annual Pink Out game and Take a Kid to A Game Day sponsored by Mercy.
