Women’s Basketball Picks Up First Road Win of Year at Northwestern

ALVA, OKLA. – The East Central University women's basketball team came from behind in the final two minutes to claim its first road win of the 2015-16 season with a 42-40 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State.

The Tigers (6-9, 6-5 GAC) were led by junior Jalyn Jackson, who garnered her second-straight double-double of the season with a career-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, while adding six steals and two blocks.  Sophomore Alexa Adair added 12 points and seven boards, while sophomore Aalyiah Blakely contributed 10 rebounds.

The opening quarter was slow to get started on the scoreboard, with ECU scoring the first points almost a minute in and the Rangers (1-15, 0-11 GAC) not getting on the board until 7:30 was left off of free throws.  That started an 8-2 run through the rest of the quarter for the Rangers to hold a 4-8 advantage.

After NWOSU hit a three at the start of the second quarter, the Tigers got back on track and used 13-6 run through six minutes to tie the game at 17.  ECU kept pushing the tempo and took their first lead of the quarter, with 3:09 left to play (20-19).  However, the Rangers countered with an 8-0 run into the end of the half to take a 20-27 lead into the locker room.

The Tigers came out strong at the start of the third quarter using a 7-0 run in the first three minutes to tie the game at 27.  However, NWOSU countered with a 5-0 run to push the lead back to four.  ECU struck next, with a 4-1 run and kept the disadvantage between one to three points through the quarter to trail 31-34 at the break.

ECU started the scoring in the fourth quarter by tying the game at 34 two minutes in.  Both teams then went cold, with no one scoring until 4:07 remained.  NWOSU was the first to hit two free throws, with the Tigers breaking their streak a few seconds later with one of two free throws.

The Rangers went on a 6-1 run over the next minute to lead 35-40.  Adair started the comeback for ECU, with 1:25 to play, when she hit a triple from the right corner.  She then added a steal, with 14 seconds left, to set up the winning play.

With seven seconds on the clock, Jackson was fouled and sent to the line.  She made the first and missed the second.  However, she got her own rebound and sent up a jumper just outside the paint to sink the winning basket.

NWOSU had a shot to tie the game with 1.7 left to play, after a foul sent them to the free throw line.  They missed the first and intentionally missed the second to try and get a shot.  The rebound went to the Rangers, but they were unable to hit the jumper and ECU earned the 42-40 win.

The game was close across the box score, with the Tigers earning a slight advantage in made field goals (14-12) and three-point field goals (5-4).

ECU will continue its road trip next weekend when they travel to face Southern Arkansas, Thursday, Jan. 28 and Arkansas-Monticello, Saturday, Jan. 30.
