KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The East Central University women's basketball team fell 35-59 to Texas A&M-Kingsville in the opening game of the 2016-17 season.
The Tigers (0-1) were led by senior
Jalyn Jackson, who tallied seven points, four rebounds and two assists. Junior
Alexa Adair also added seven points and an assist. Junior
Aalyiah Blakley led the team on the boards with six, while adding three points and two assists.
ECU took a while to get its offense going, as they were held scoreless through the first minute of the opening quarter. The Javelinas (1-0) continued the defensive pressure and increased the lead to 11 (2-13), in the first three minutes of the stanza. The teams then traded points the rest of the quarter, with the Tigers trailing 10-21 at the end of the 10 minutes.
Both teams picked up the defense in the second quarter, with ECU scoring just five points and the Javelinas eight for a 15-29 score at the half.
The Tigers opened the second half on a 5-0 run that cut the disadvantage to nine (20-29). However, Kingsville countered with a 16-3 run, before they allowed ECU to score another field goal. The run increased the lead to 23-45 heading into the fourth quarter.
When the Tigers scored again, with 8:28 left in the game, it sparked a 6-0 run (29-45) over the next minutes. However, the deficit was too much to overcome and ECU ended up falling, 35-59.
ECU will stay in Kingsville, Texas for their next game, facing Tampa, Saturday, Nov. 12 at 4:30 p.m., as the final game of the Texas A&M-Kingsville Classic.
