Softball Splits Double-Header at Southwestern

WEATHERFORD, OKLA. – The East Central University softball team split the first of two double-headers with Southwestern Oklahoma State in the opening weekend of Great American Conference action.  The Tigers (4-9, 1-1 GAC) fell in the opening game 2-6 before rebounding with a 5-2 come-from-behind victory.

ECU was led by senior Autumn Suydam with a .500 batting average for the day.  She tallied four hits, scored once and added an RBI.  Senior Jordynn VanPelt added three hits and three RBIs, including an infield double.

Senior Lacey Paulk threw the first game, allowing eight hits and six runs and striking out six.  Senior Marissa Shaffer earned the win in the second game, striking out two and allowing six hits and two runs (one earned).

The teams will wrap up the four-game GAC series, Saturday, Feb. 20 starting at noon.

ECU 5, SWOSU 2
In the second game of the day, the Bulldogs (3-9, 1-1 GAC) took an early lead, with a single run in the second inning.  SWOSU added a second run in the sixth for a 0-2 lead heading into the final inning.

That is when the Tigers buckled down and got some things going.  After the first out freshman Mariah Ewy was walked, freshman Breecia Crawford was hit by a pitch and senior Taylor Davis drew a walk to load the bases.

Suydam earned her RBI for the day with a single to short and kept the bases loaded.  VanPelt drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center that tied the game at two.  Senior Lauren Reeves loaded the bases again with a walk.  Junior Sydney Dow then reached due to an error, which allowed two more runs to score.

The final run of the inning came due to a wild pitch to put ECU up 5-2.

The Bulldogs started the bottom of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles, but the Tiger defense shut down SWOSU to earn the 5-2 victory.

SWOSU 6, ECU 2
The Tigers opened the scoring in the third inning of the first game of the day.  After two outs, Taylor Davis hit a single through the right side and was joined on base by Suydam, who reached due to error.  VanPelt earned the RBI when she hit a rare infield double to the pitcher.

ECU kept the Bulldogs off the board until the bottom of the fifth inning, but when they did score, SWOSU put six runs on the board to take a 1-6 advantage.

The Tigers started to fight back I the seventh inning, but they were only able to add one more run on singles from Taylor Davis and VanPelt.  VanPelt earned the RBI, resulting in the 2-6 final.
