Football Falls to No. 9 Henderson State

ADA – In the first home game of the 2016 season, the East Central University football team fell to No. 9 Henderson State, 7-34, at Norris Field at Koi Ishto Stadium.

The Tigers (0-2) ended up with more total offensive yards (334-323) than the Reddies (2-0), but struggled with turnovers through the game.  ECU lost four fumbles (recovered one) and was intercepted twice.

The Tigers were paced by senior Brooks Holders, who went 22-of-37 for the night, for 289 yards at quarterback.  His favorite receiver for the night was senior Randall Case, with 101 yards and six catches, while senior Seth Handley caught one 15-yard pass for a TD.

Sophomore Tre'von Jackson led the rushing charge, with 11 attempts (12 yards), while freshman Xavier Scott rushed 13 times for 11 yards.

Junior Camnik Campbell and redshirt junior Vernon Johnson led the defensive side of the ball, with over 10 tackles each.  Campbell record 12 (3-9) total tackles and 1.5 TFL, while Johnson added 11 (4-7).

HSU got the scoring started early, scoring 20 points in the first quarter, with three touchdowns and one failed extra-point attempt.

The Reddies pushed the lead to 0-27 with a TD, with 9:57 left in the second quarter and took the advantage all the way to the fourth quarter before ECU got on the scoreboard.

The Tigers scored their lone touchdown with 14:43 left in the fourth quarter for a 7-27 score.  Handley caught a 15-yard pass that capped off a four-play, 99-yard drive.

However, HSU added one more TD in the fourth for the 7-34 final.

The Tigers will now hit the road to face Southern Nazarene, Saturday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. in Bethany, Okla.
