ADA, OKLA. – The East Central University baseball team had a very strong offensive day, picking up a 19-9 win over Bacone College at Ken Turner Field.
The Tigers (7-13) tallied a total of 17 hits, with 18 RBIS, 11 walks and just three strikeouts in the victory. A total of five players had multi-hit days, with seniors
Jake MeKeel and
Kaleb Matthews leading the charge with three each.
MeKeel scored three times and earned a walk, while Matthews scored twice, sent four runs home and was walked once. Junior
Connor Stevenson also had a strong day at the plate, with two hits, three runs, five RBIS and five walks.
The pitching was a group effort, with seven members of the ECU pitching staff hitting the mound during the game. Sophomore
Garrett Dimmitt started the game and earned the win, throwing the first two innings, allowing two hits and no runs, with one strikeout.
The Tigers started the scoring in the first inning, netting two runs. After the first out
Connor Stevenson was walked, Matthews singled and junior
Wesley Carswell was walked to load the bases. Both runs were then scored by junior
Dalton Etheredge when he singled up the middle.
ECU added a run in the third for a 3-0 lead. Matthews earned the RBI with a single after senior
Kodiak O'Ravez was hit by a pitch and
Connor Stevenson walked.
The Warriors (4-19) got on the board with a single run in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Tigers responded with a run of their own in the fourth on singles from sophomore
Zach Lewis and
Connor Stevenson for the 4-1 advantage.
Bacone added a run to its total in the fifth for a 4-2 score. However, ECU's offense really exploded in the bottom of the fifth, with 10 runs. The Tigers tallied five hits and drew three walks, including a double, two triples and a home run to push the lead to 14-2.
The Warriors responded in the sixth, scoring seven runs to cut the lead to 14-9.
ECU did not go away quietly, scoring a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh for the 19-9 final.
The Tigers will spend the rest of Spring Break preparing for a three-game Great American Conference series against Ouachita at Ken Turner Field, March 17-18.
