SEARCY, ARK. – The East Central University baseball team fell in the final two games of the Great American Conference series at Harding. The Tigers fell 3-5 in the opening game of the day and then 0-2 in the finale.
The teams had close to the same number of hits in the games, with the Tigers (9-23, 8-16 GAC) netting 10 and the Bisons (15-21, 11-13 GAC) 11. Senior
JT Stevenson led ECU with a .500 average, two hits and one run scored. Senior
Kaleb Matthews added a .400 average, two hits, a home run, one run and two RBIs.
Junior
Brandon Dusenberry and senior
Jake Wellington both threw complete games, with Wellington throwing the nine-inning game and Dusenberry the seven. Wellington allowed eight hits and five runs, while striking out four. Dusenberry earned 10 Ks, with three hits and two runs allowed.
The Tigers will return home for the next league series, April 14-15 against Oklahoma Baptist at Ken Turner Field.
Harding 5, ECU 3
Harding started the scoring in game one, taking a 0-2 advantage in the first inning.
It took until the fifth inning before ECU got on the scoreboard, cutting the deficit to one (1-2).
JT Stevenson singled to lead off the inning and was sent to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Trevor Huie. That allowed junior
Austin LoBue to earn the RBI with a single.
However, the Bisons pushed the lead back to two, with a run in the bottom of the fifth (1-3).
The Tigers kept pushing and tied the game at three in the sixth. After the first out, senior
Jake MeKeel singled before Matthews hit a home run to right field to knot the game at three.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when Harding scored two runs for the 3-5 lead.
ECU got a runner on in the ninth, but was unable to get the runner past first for the 3-5 final.
Harding 2, ECU 0
The second game of the day was a low scoring affair, with the Tigers not getting its lone hit until the seventh inning.
The Bisons scored an early run in the first again and both teams were scoreless again until the fifth when Harding added the final run of the game for the 0-2 win.
