Box Score ADA – The East Central University volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 18-25, 16-25) to Southwestern Oklahoma State in the first Great American Conference match of the 2017 season at the Kerr Activities Center.

The key to the match came at the service line and at the net, as the Bulldogs (4-5, 1-0 GAC) earned a 12-3 advantage in service aces and a 9.0 to 3.0 lead in blocks.
The Tigers (3-5, 0-1 GAC) were paced by junior
Karina Erreguin, with 14 kills, a .270 (14k-4e-37ta) hitting percentage, a service aces, block assist and three digs. Senior
Alex Campbell added 13 kills and a .235 (13k-5e-34ta) attack percentage and five digs. Senior
Lily Porsa led the team on the defensive side, with 30 digs, while sophomore
Macy Kurtz added 18 digs.
While SWOSU earned the first point of the match, ECU countered with a 4-0 run and never let the Bulldogs get closer than two points the rest of the set. The Tigers used several small runs to push the advantage to as many as seven, before earning the 25-19 win.
The teams traded the first eight serves in the set second, but SWOSU went on a 7-0 run to take control of the set 11-4. The Bulldogs kept the pressure up throughout the set and earned the 25-17 win.
The third set was close at the start, with SWOSU leading most of the time. The Tigers kept things close until a 3-0 run gave the Bulldogs a 12-8 lead. SWOSU then kept the lead at least by three points the rest of the set, before pushing toward the end for the 25-18 win.
ECU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the fourth set and pushed the lead to five (8-3). However, that is when the Bulldogs started a push and went on a 7-2 run to tie the set at 10 and extended it to 9-2 for the lead. The teams traded points for the next few serves before a 7-0 run by SWOSU got them to match point (24-14). The Tigers held off the end of the match for two more points, before the Bulldogs took the 25-16 victory.
ECU will continue its busy week, Thursday, Sept. 14 with a 7 p.m. match against Fort Hays State at the Kerr Activities Center. The Tigers will also participate in the GAC/MIAA Crossover Tournament, Sept. 15-16 in Edmond and Bethany, Okla.
