ARKADELPHIA, ARK. – The East Central University women's basketball team lost a key game in Great American Conference action, 79-71 to Henderson State. The loss pushed ECU out of the eighth and final spot to make the tournament in the GAC standings, with just five games left in the regular season.
Senior
Devon Branch led the Tigers (7-14, 6-11 GAC) with a career-high 26 points, while adding four rebounds and a steal. Junior
Lakin Preisner added a career-high 22 points, with seven boards, an assist and a steal.
ECU came out of the gates ready to battle and went on a 10-0 run in the first four minutes. The Reddies (17-6, 13-4 GAC) followed with an 11-2 run to cut the lead to one (12-11), with two minutes left in the stanza. ECU ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 18-11.
The Tigers kept pushing the tempo and allowed HSU to score just six points in the first half of the second stanza, while adding 19 of their own for a 37-17 advantage. ECU kept the tempo up and ended the half with a 43-25 advantage.
The Reddies came out strong in the third quarter, using a 21-4 run in the first six minutes to cut the lead to one (47-46). HSU kept pushing and tied the game at 50, with three minutes left in the quarter. The Tigers picked up their game in the reaming time in the quarter and used a 6-2 run to take a 56-52 lead into the final stanza.
The battle continued at the start of the fourth quarter, with HSU fighting to earn its first lead of the game (59-58) in the first three minutes. The Reddies continued to increase the pressure and built their lead to 61-58.
ECU continued to struggle to hit their shots, while HSU increased the lead to 72-60, with two minutes left to play. While the Reddies were not allowed to get a shot attempt, but were sent to the free-throw line for the remainder of the game. However, the Tigers were unable to cut the deficit lower than six points on the way to the 79-71 loss.
ECU will wrap up a three-game road trip, Thursday, Feb. 15 when they make the short trip to Bethany, Okla., to face Southern Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.
