Women’s Basketball Picks Up Victory at Texas Woman’s to Start 2021-22 Season

DENTON, Texas – For the first time since the 2013-14 season the East Central University women's basketball team earned a win in the opening game of the season, this time defeating Texas Woman's 72-64.

Scoring
  • 1st Quarter: 15-17
    • The teams traded points for most of the stanza
    • The Pioneers (0-1) led most of the time, but not by more than six (15-9/2:33)
    • The Tigers (1-0) finished the quarter on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to two
  • 2nd Quarter: 20-17 (35-34)
    • ECU continued the run to 6-0 in the opening 1:30 of the second quarter to tie the game at 17
    • The teams traded small runs until a 22-all tie, with 6:56 remaining
    • The Tigers then used a 12-2 run to push the tempo and take a 10-point lead, with 2:45 left
    • TWU fought back and tied the set at 34, with a minute remaining (34-34)
    • ECU scored the final point of the half, with 28 second left on a free throw
  • 3rd Quarter: 18-16 (53-50)
    • The Tigers came out firing in the second half and used a 10-2 run in the opening 2:15 to gain a nine-point advantage
    • The Pioneers fought back with in two (47-45), with three minutes left
    • ECU kept the lead on their side of the score board around three points for the rest of the stanza
  • 4th Quarter: 19-14 (73-64)
    • The Tigers kept up the pressure and increased the lead to 11 (61-50) in the first 4:30 minutes
    • TWU did not get closer than six points the rest of the game
