ADA, Okla. – East Central University's amazing run through its 2022 football schedule added another win by beating visiting Southwestern Oklahoma State, 42-28.
ECU (6-2) has won six straight since an 0-2 start. The win streak is the Tigers' longest in 38 years since College Hall of Fame Quarterback Brad Calip led the team to eight straight in 1984. The Tigers remain in a three-way tie with Harding and Henderson State in the conference standings. All three trail unbeaten Ouachita Baptist by two games.
"We have been consistent in playing complimentary football the last six weeks," ECU Head Coach Kris McCullough said. "We play as one family in every facet. We all do our part to go 1-0 each week."
ECU scored 28 consecutive points through the third and fourth quarters to break open a 14-14 game. Both early scores came on the ground. Nemier Herod had his longest score of the year, going 66 yards in the game's opening minute. La'Quan Wells then took a reverse and went untouched 40 yards for the second score, giving the Tigers a 14-7 lead at the beginning of the second quarter.
Kenny Hrncir heated up, throwing three touchdown passes. The first was to Greg Howell for 42 yards, then Walter Brooks caught a 12-yard pass, and Jayquan Lincoln scored from 88 yards, the longest play of the season. Hrncir finished completing 16-of-25 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He has now passed for more yards than any other player in ECU history, with 6,241 yards.
"Our offense was clicking all game again," McCullough said. "Our play making ability was on full display this game. We are all happy for Kenny, breaking the career passing record. He deserves every bit of recognition he gets."
Defensively, the Tigers were dominant. SWOSU was held to 104 yards passing and completed less than half of its passes. The Bulldogs did come up with two meaningless scores in the final moments of the fourth quarter to make the final score appear closer than it was.
Devon Roush had a season-best 15 tackles while teammate Ameer Muhammad was next with 10 stops to lead the Tigers defensively.
"Our defense played a very good offense today. They came out and played at a high level of football," McCullough said.
"Our fan support was awesome today. It was a great day to be in Ada," McCullough said. "We will enjoy this win for about 12 hours and then begin working on Ouachita Baptist."
