ADA, Okla. – The East Central University volleyball team started their 2022 season home opener with a bang, sweeping Oklahoma Baptist University (25-21, 25-17, 25-20). This is only the second sweep against the Bisons in program history.
"I am so proud of them for playing together," said Head Coach
Cheri Lindsay. "They trusted each other and enjoyed playing next to each other. I also want to give a shout-out to the crowd! It was electric!"
As a team, ECU had a .317 hitting percentage in their explosive offensive performance. The Tigers led in every major category against OBU.
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle between both teams with 14 ties and two lead changes. Tied at 19-all, ECU broke ahead and went on a 6-1 run to end the set 25-21 and take the lead against OBU.
With a set win under their belt, the Tigers put the pressure on the Bisons, going on a 6-0 scoring run to start the second set. ECU remained in control the rest of the way and cruised to the set two victory 25-17.
Set three was another offensive battle and saw the score tied at 19-all before ECU pulled away. The Bisons had cut the lead within one, but a 4-0 scoring run secured the set 25-20 and the sweep for the Tigers.
ECU had three players earning double-digit kills.
Nyah Walker posted 10 kills,
Aloni Jordan recorded 12, and
Emma Strickland led the way with 13. Jordan was a presence at the net totaling 5 blocks while Strickland tallied 14 digs.
Leah Lawson ran the court with 44 assists, 8 digs, and two service aces.
Alejandra Delgado covered the back row with 15 digs and two service aces as well.
The East Central University volleyball team will hit the road Saturday, Sept. 17 to face Northwestern State University in another GAC matchup in Alva, Oklahoma at 2 p.m.
