Volleyball Battles Oklahoma Christian in Five Set Loss

ADA, Okla. – The East Central University volleyball team took a break from GAC action to face Oklahoma Christian University for a home nonconference matchup, but lost in five sets inside the Kerr Activities Center Tuesday night.

Oklahoma Christian snuck away with the first set 25-21 before ECU responded in the second set 25-22 to tie the match 1-1.

The Tigers were out front leading 12-8 in the third set until a 14-2 scoring run by the Eagles propelled Oklahoma Christian to settle the set 25-19. After being down 12-10 in the fourth, ECU went on a 5-0 scoring run to regain and maintain the lead, eventually taking the set 25-20 to send the match to the fifth set.

Despite the Eagles jumping out to an early lead in the fifth that saw them sitting at match point 14-4, the Tigers fought off five straight points to close the gap to 14-9. But the comeback was too little, too late, and Oklahoma Christian would secure the final point to pull out the 3-2 win.

Emma Strickland and Odalys Gonzalez led the offensive effort with 20 kills and 14 kills, respectively. On defense, Sydney Roshek led the back row with 17 digs while Julia Kabala directed the offense with 28 assists.

The ECU volleyball team will resume conference play at home with matches against Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State on Thursday, Oct. 12, and Friday, Oct. 13.
