ADA, Okla. – The East Central University soccer team hosted Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday for a Great American Conference matchup that ultimately saw the Tigers emerge victorious in commanding fashion, securing a shutout victory at Tiger Soccer Field.
The win improves ECU to 1-7-3 overall and 1-1-3 in conference action.
"It was a great team win," Head Coach
Riley Bailey said. "They came out determined from the start and showed a lot of heart. I am proud of the ladies and their effort."
The early minutes passed in the first half without much action until the eighth minute when the Rangers took the initiative with their first shot of the match. Northwestern would follow with four more attempts, but they were all unable to find the back of the net while the Tigers seized the moment and capitalized on their second corner kick. Off the delivery, the ball struck the top post from
Reece Roberson's right foot, only to rebound perfectly into the path of
Brooklyn Meisner who then buried the ball into the net with her head to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
As the second half got underway, the Tigers continued to showcase their resilience. Northwestern launched 10 shot attempts in their effort to level the game, but the Tiger defense held firm, denying any opportunities the Rangers put up.
In the 79
th minute, ECU extended their lead when a well-executed give-and-go pass between
Abbie Morris and
Cambori Watson set up Morris to maneuver past two Ranger defenders before slotting the ball into the back of the net to give the Tigers the insurance goal they were seeking and solidify the 2-0 win.
Despite being outshot 17-12 by Northwestern, ECU's efficiency in front of the goal, combined with their defense, proved to be the difference-maker.
Abbie Morris registered her second goal of the season while
Brooklyn Meisner recorded her first.
McKenna Leveling earned the win after playing 90 minutes in net and tallying three stops.
The ECU soccer team will hit the road to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to face Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 12 pm.
