Volleyball Sweeps Langston in Home Opener

ADA, Okla. – The East Central Volleyball team collected their first sweep of the 2023 season following a 3-0 victory over Langston University in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night.

With the win, the Tigers improve to a 2-3 overall heading into their final tournament before conference action.

Tuesday's match saw a similar theme in all three sets. Both sides struggled to find a consistent groove early and through the middle parts of the set, but it was ECU who caught stride in all three frames to distance themselves from Langston and take control of the match.

In the opening set, the Tigers led 20-12 before the Lions attempted a comeback to trail 20-16. But ECU fired right back earning five of the set's final six points for the 25-17 win.

In set two, ECU and Langston were knotted up 7-7 before the Tigers had a four-point burst that separated them from the Lions 11-7. From there, it was all ECU as they went on to close out the set 25-21.

In the third set, ECU was cruising comfortably and led 17-12 before Langston made things interesting crawling back to trail just 12-11. But a 6-1 run by the Tigers put them at arm's lengths again and ECU settled the match for good with a 25-22 win.

Odalys Gonzalez was the lone Tiger to reach double-digit kills with 15 while Emma Strickland was close with nine kills. Brooke Sarahina and Julia Kabala split the setting duties dishing out 19 assists and 14 assists, respectively. Ashleigh Miller also recorded a career-high six service aces.

ECU will travel to Durango, Colorado for more tournament action hosted by Fort Lewis College Sept. 8-9.
