Women’s Basketball Set to Tip Off 2024-25 Season at Oklahoma Christian
ADA, Okla. – The East Central University women's basketball team is ready to tip off its 2024-25 season today, traveling to Oklahoma Christian University for a 6 p.m. showdown. With an eye on improvement, the Tigers enter the season with renewed optimism, looking to build off a 10-16 overall record last year.
Head coach
Heather Hurt, now in her second full season at the helm and her 11th season with the program, is focused on generating a competitive squad that can make an impact in the Great American Conference.
Coach Hurt is joined by an experienced coaching staff, including second-year assistant coach
Kaitlyn Hodgins, longtime assistant coach
Jeff McGaha, and second-year graduate assistant
Mia Meshell. Hurt's leadership and the collective experience of her staff should provide the necessary guidance as the Tigers look to build on last year's foundation and take a step forward this season.
The Tigers bring back some key returners, led by junior guard
Jayden Weiberg and sophomore guard
Kayley Alt. Weiberg is the team's leading returning scorer, averaging 7.9 points per game and excelling from beyond the arc with a team-high three-point shooting percentage of .403. Alt, who made an immediate impact as a freshman, follows closely behind Weiberg in both scoring and three-point shooting, with a .386 shooting clip and 93 total points last season.
Other returning contributors include
Chloe Malone, the Tigers' leading rebounder from last year (74 rebounds), and
Tatum Havens, a key all-around player who posted a .400 three-point shooting percentage and added 64 rebounds.
Natalie Payne, another crucial returner, is currently recovering from an injury but will look to continue her impact when she returns to full strength.
ECU's 2024-25 roster is strengthened by six newcomers who bring experience, speed, height, and versatility, including transfers
Eva Fernandez (Cisco College),
Peyton Mosley (Hutchinson CC),
Lucia Hervia (Texas A&M Commerce), and
Katie Edelen (Northern Oklahoma College Enid), along with freshmen
Sydney Wade (John Pual II HS) and
Claira Dannefer (Abilene HS).
