Women’s Basketball Suffers Tough Road Loss in Final Seconds to SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The East Central University women's basketball team faced off against Southwestern Oklahoma State University in their first Great American Conference road match of the week on Monday night. Despite building a 15-point halftime lead, the Tigers were unable to hold off a late surge from the Bulldogs, who completed a comeback in the final seconds to secure a 62-60 victory.

With the loss, ECU falls to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in GAC play, while SWOSU earns its first conference win of the season.

The Tigers appeared to be in control after a strong first half, during which they drained eight three-pointers and outscored the Bulldogs 36-21. However, after the break, SWOSU intensified its defense, took advantage of ECU turnovers, and found its shooting touch from long range, gradually closing the gap to within a single possession in the final minute.

Katie Edelen gave ECU a four-point cushion with a clutch jumper, putting the Tigers up 60-56, but the Bulldogs answered quickly with a three-pointer to trim the lead to one. Following another ECU turnover, SWOSU drove in a layup to take a 61-60 lead — their first since the opening basket. A missed layup by the Tigers gave them little time to respond, and they were forced to foul with just four seconds left. SWOSU made one of two free throws, giving ECU one last chance. Makenzy Herman raced down the court and attempted a floater to tie the game, but it missed, sealing the heartbreaking loss.

Katie Edelen led the offense with 16 points and came close to a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds. Makenzy Herman and Claira Dannefer each scored 13 points, with Herman and Jayden Weiberg each hitting three three-pointers.

As a team, ECU outshot SWOSU from the field (40.8% to 39.2%) and dominated the rebounding battle (37-23), but 22 turnovers, compared to the Bulldogs' 13, proved to be the deciding factor.

The ECU women's basketball team will wrap up its pre-Christmas schedule with a road game against Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Thursday, Dec. 19, at 5:30 p.m.
