ADA, Okla. – The East Central University baseball team clinched a series sweep against Nebraska Wesleyan after holding off the Prairie Wolves in game two on Tuesday afternoon at Ken Turner Field. Following an 8-7 win in game one the previous day, the Tigers secured a 7-4 triumph in the second game.
ECU built a 7-2 lead after six innings, but NWU put pressure on the Tigers as they narrowed the gap with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Although the Prairie Wolves had two runners on base and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, a final fly out to right field shut the door for NWU and clinched the series win for ECU.
As a team, the Tigers racked up 11 hits with
Dione Allen leading at the plate going 3-for-5 with two runs scored in the win.
On the hill,
Bryce Crawford earned the win after allowing three runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work while
Justin Chitty secured the save with a scoreless outing in the last 1.1 innings.
The Tigers got on the board first and never looked back after posting four runs on three hits, highlighted by RBI singles from
Christian Whitaker,
DeAngelo Morales, and
Austin Wood. After the second inning, ECU's lead extended to 5-0 when
Tanner Collins' grounder to shortstop allowed
Britton Sperry to score at home.
One scoreless inning went by before the Prairie Wolves tagged their first run of the game in the top of the fourth to trail 5-1. However, Jarett Johnson's sacrifice fly out to center field plated Morales to pull ahead with a 6-1 lead.
Both ECU and NWU added runs in the sixth with the Tigers still keeping a comfortable lead of 7-2. However, the Prairie Wolves would continue to close the gap with additional runs while ECU's scoring stopped after the sixth inning.
Despite NWU scoring two more runs over the next two innings, it was not enough to overcome the Tigers' lead as ECU got the job done in the ninth to secure the 7-4 victory.
Tanner Collins and
DeAngelo Morales also had multiple hits in the game with two while
Christian Whitaker,
Kale Williams,
Austin Wood, and
Britton Sperry collected one.
The ECU baseball team will be back in action at home when they host Southwestern Oklahoma State University for a GAC series beginning Friday, March 8
