Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Southeastern to Conclude 2024 Season

DURANT, Okla. – The East Central University baseball team wrapped up its last Great American Conference series of the 2024 season against rivals Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Despite a challenging start to the weekend, the Tigers showed resilience in Saturday's doubleheader, clinching a hard-fought 8-7 victory in the first game before narrowly dropping a tough 3-2 loss in the series finale to conclude the year.

Though the outcome was not what they had hoped for, there were several standout moments worth celebrating.

Senior Justin Chitty delivered a memorable performance, securing the final win of his career after stepping up in relief during the eighth inning of game one. Although Southeastern ended up tying the game in that same inning, ECU answered back in the ninth, adding a single run thanks to DeAngelo Morales' sacrifice fly, ultimately securing the thrilling 8-7 victory and knotting the series 1-1.

Another bright spot came from senior Christian Whitaker, whose offensive power brought not one, but two two-run homers, accounting for four of the Tigers' eight runs in the win. With a total of 18 career home runs, Whitaker now sits at the No. 2 spot on the ECU top-10 career record list.

Despite ECU's heart-breaking loss in the series finale, starting pitcher Cal Birchfield kept the Tigers in the game on the mound, limiting the Storm to five hits and two runs while striking out five batters. He lasted six complete innings before Clayton Solomon came in relief for the final inning.

Over the weekend, Dione Allen and Tanner Collins led at the charge at the plate collecting three hits each while Christian Whitaker, Nick Blankenship, Britton Sperry, Kale Williams, and Krew Taylor contributed two apiece.

As the season drew to a close, 14 seniors played in their final games as an ECU Tiger, including Britton Sperry, Chase Owen, Nick Blankenship, Gage Boatman, Clayton Solomon, Price Daube, Dione Allen, Colton Schaper-Kotter, Chat Hayes, Christian Whitaker, Justin Chitty, Jarod Leroux, Bryce Crawford, and Bryan Terry.
