Football’s Search for Win Continues with 20-10 Loss to Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE, Okla. – In a matchup that featured two teams hungry for their first win of the 2024 season, East Central University football faced off against Oklahoma Baptist University in a road test at Crain Family Stadium on Saturday night. Unfortunately for the Tigers, their struggles continued as they fell 20-10 to the Bison, marking their fourth consecutive loss of the season.

The Tigers were unable to find their rhythm in the opening quarter as OBU took advantage and jumped out to a commanding 10-point lead with a six-yard touchdown and a subsequent 33-yard field goal.

ECU showed flashes of potential, starting in the second quarter when Sergio Kennedy connected with Deqavius Bowens on an impressive 83-yard touchdown pass – Bowens' first of the season – narrowing the gap 10-7. The Tigers' defense stepped up as well, forcing OBU to turn the ball over on downs in their next two drives.

In the third quarter, Brandon Perez converted a 44-yard field goal to tie the game 10-10, putting ECU in prime position to claim the lead. But OBU quickly responded with a 43-yard field goal of their own, regaining the advantage to end the third quarter.

ECU's momentum took a hit as they failed to score on their next possession and the Bison threatened in the red zone. Yet, ECU's Seth Aguilera forced a fumble which was recovered by Chase Faber, reigniting hope for the Tigers.

Despite this spark, ECU would not be able to capitalize on the momentum as OBU intercepted Kennedy's pass, giving possession back to the Bison. OBU eventually found the back of the end zone once more in the final two minutes, sealing a 20-10 victory

The Bison dominated in ball control, out gaining ECU 336-207 in total offensive yardage and holding possession for over 38 minutes. The Tigers struggled offensively, managing just 27 rushing yards and 180 yards through the air.

ECU football will look to regroup next week as they prepare for their Homecoming matchup against the University of Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 3 pm.
