WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The East Central University women's basketball team picked up another win on Saturday afternoon as they powered past Midwestern State University 59-38 to stay unbeaten.
The Tigers move to 4-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 season and aim to carry that momentum into Great American Conference play as they prepare for Ouachita Baptist on December 4 and Henderson State on December 6.
The Tigers struck first with a quick layup from
Claira Dannefer and held steady throughout the opening period, taking a 7-6 lead after a defensive, low-scoring first quarter.
The Tigers began to separate in the second quarter, sparked by a three from
Jayden Weiberg and consistent scoring around the rim. MSU briefly closed the gap with outside shooting, but ECU maintained control behind balanced ball movement and a late bucket from
Ella Lavigne. The Tigers carried a 22-18 edge into halftime, building momentum on both ends of the floor.
ECU pushed that momentum forward in the third, opening the half with layups from
Katie Edelen,
Rylie Burnett, and
Eva Fernandez to extend the lead. Even as MSU connected on a few shots from deep, the Tigers answered each run, including another timely three from Weiberg. ECU's steady execution helped send the game into the fourth with a 38-27 advantage.
The Tigers dominated the final quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 21-11 and never allowing them back into the game. Dannefer opened the period with a strong finish inside, and Weiberg delivered two more threes to create a comfortable cushion. In the closing minutes,
Natalie Milwood added key layups to seal the outcome as ECU closed out a 59-38 victory and continued its perfect start to the season.
ECU controlled the paint, outscoring MSU 32-14 while also winning the rebounding battle 40-31.
ECU was led by
Jayden Weiberg's 15 points on five threes, followed by eight points each from
Rylie Burnett,
Claira Dannefer, and
Natalie Milwood. On the boards,
Katie Edelen grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, with
Peyton Mosley adding six. Weiberg also finished as the Tigers' assist leader with three.
