PIEDMONT, Okla. – After rescheduling due to weather, the East Central University baseball team faced off against Southern Nazarene University at Piedmont High School in the opening game of their Great American Conference series. The Tigers' offense wasted no time, jumping out to an early lead and cruising to a 13-2 victory in a seven-inning run-rule win, extending their win streak to five games.
With the win, ECU improves to 9-26 overall and 5-17 in conference play, while SNU drops to 3-19 in the GAC. The Tigers will return to Ken Turner Field and look to secure the series victory in tomorrow's doubleheader starting at noon.
The win marked a strong rebound for ECU following last week's midweek nonconference loss to SNU, where the Crimson Storm staged a late rally to claim the win.
On the mound, starting pitcher
Luke Livian delivered an impressive 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits. Reliever
Ryan Dembroski closed out the game with 1.2 scoreless innings, keeping SNU off the board as the Tigers' offense remained hot, scoring in all but two innings.
ECU jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first after a throwing error by SNU allowed
Zac Carroll to score, followed by an RBI single from
Christian Fernandez that plated
Blake Seefeldt. In the second inning, the Tigers extended their lead with four runs on four hits.
Mason Shimkus' two-RBI single to center field doubled the Tigers' advantage before Carroll's sacrifice bunt brought Shimkus home. Seefeldt then singled to center, driving in
Weldon Sherrell for a 6-0 lead.
SNU got on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly, but ECU continued to add to their lead in the fourth, with Fernandez's two-RBI double to right field putting the Tigers up 8-1. The Tigers broke the game wide open in the fifth, scoring five runs on four hits.
Pryce Jackson crossed the plate on a balk, Sherrell delivered a two-RBI single to right-center, and Seefeldt's two-RBI double to left-center pushed ECU's lead to a commanding 13-1.
SNU managed one more run in the sixth, but that would be their final tally as the Tigers shut them down in the seventh to secure the win.
Weldon Sherrell had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs.
Blake Seefeldt and
Christian Fernandez also shone at the plate, each going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
