Ogura’s Late Field Goal Lifts Tigers to 58-56 Road Win Over ATU

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The (RV) East Central University football team delivered a thrilling finish Saturday afternoon, edging Arkansas Tech University 58-56 on the road as Gabriel Ogura connected on a 26-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining to secure the victory during the Wonder Boys' Homecoming game.

In a back-and-forth contest that featured multiple momentum swings, the Tigers improved to 5-1 in Great American Conference play, marking ECU's first 5-1 start since the 1983 season. The 58-point performance also marked the Tigers' highest-scoring game since opening the 2017 season with a 55-34 win over Oklahoma Baptist.

East Central came out strong, opening the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown run by Quincy Thompson before Arkansas Tech answered to tie the game at 7-7. Thompson found the end zone again late in the first quarter, capping a 12-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to give ECU a 14-7 advantage.

Ogura added a 44-yard field goal early in the second quarter, extending the Tigers' lead to 17-7. After the Wonder Boys cut the deficit to three, Sergio Kennedy connected with Kaden Jones for a 44-yard touchdown to push ECU's lead back to 24-14.

Arkansas Tech continued to respond, cutting the deficit to 24-20, but the Tigers closed the first half with two more touchdowns. Thompson powered in from one yard out for his third rushing touchdown of the afternoon with just over a minute remaining. Moments later, Elyon White intercepted a pass at the ATU 30-yard line, setting up a quick scoring strike as Kennedy connected with Jones for a 30-yard touchdown to send ECU into halftime with a 38-20 lead.

The Wonder Boys came out of the break determined to climb back into the game, scoring twice in the third quarter to cut the Tigers' advantage to 38-33. Ogura connected on a 24-yard field goal late in the period to give ECU some breathing room at 41-33.

The Tigers struck quickly again to open the fourth quarter, as Kennedy found Jones for a 74-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 48-33. Arkansas Tech answered with a 67-yard rushing touchdown before adding another score to tie the game at 48-48 with 9:59 remaining.

ECU responded with a sustained eight-play, 67-yard drive, capped by Kennedy's touchdown pass that was recovered by Gabriel Bennett II with 5:37 left on the clock. Ogura's extra point put the Tigers back in front, 55-48.

The Tigers had one final opportunity, and the offense delivered under pressure. ECU moved 52 yards on 10 plays to set up Ogura for the go-ahead field goal. The sophomore kicker drilled the 26-yard attempt with 10 seconds remaining, putting East Central back on top, 58-56.

Arkansas Tech made one last attempt to reclaim the lead, lining up for a 54-yard field goal in the closing seconds. The kick sailed wide, allowing the Tigers to escape with the two-point victory.
