INDIANAPOLIS – East Central University football checked in at No. 22 in the inaugural NCAA Division II Football Power Index (NPI), released Sunday, Oct. 18, marking the Tigers' debut in the new national ranking system.

The Tigers are currently 6-1 in Great American Conference play under head coach John Litrenta, who continues to keep the team focused on the task at hand, emphasizing that the goal each week is to "go 1-0" as the Tigers look to build on their success and finish the season strong.

The NCAA Power Index is a data-driven ranking system designed to evaluate Division II teams based on game results, strength of schedule and performance against opponents. The system provides a consistent method for evaluating teams across NCAA Division II while accounting for sport-specific factors.

A team's NPI can change throughout the season as:
  • The team plays additional contests
  • Opponents' NPI values change
  • Strength of schedule changes
  • Games are added to or removed from the team's adjusted record

NPI serves as a primary tool for comparing teams for NCAA championship selection and, in some cases, seeding. In Division II, teams that earn automatic qualification secure championship spots, while remaining at-large selections are determined using NPI rankings, with regional allocation also considered.

ECU will look to maintain its momentum as the Tigers enter the final stretch of the regular season, returning home on Saturday, Oct. 24, to host Southwestern Oklahoma State University at 3 p.m. at Koi Ishto Stadium for Homecoming.
