Football Edged by SWOSU in Homecoming Showdown

ADA, Okla. – East Central University football battled Southwestern Oklahoma State University in a tightly contested Homecoming matchup on Saturday at Koi Ishto Stadium, but a late fourth-quarter rally came up just short as the Tigers fell 23-21.

ECU moves to 6-2 overall on the season and will look to bounce back next Saturday, Oct. 31, as the Tigers travel to Magnolia, Arkansas, for their final road game of the regular season against Southern Arkansas University.

The Tigers opened the afternoon with an impressive drive, covering 90 yards in eight plays to take an early lead. Quincy Thompson capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run to put ECU ahead 7-0. SWOSU answered with a scoring drive of its own to even the score at 7-7 heading into the second quarter.

ECU regained the lead midway through the second quarter when Sergio Kennedy connected with Austin Bowen for a 47-yard touchdown pass, finishing an 87-yard drive to give the Tigers a 14-7 advantage. The Bulldogs responded with a 63-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14-14 before adding a field goal in the final seconds of the half to take a 17-14 lead into the break.

Neither team found the end zone in the third quarter as both defenses held firm. SWOSU extended its lead to 23-14 early in the fourth quarter, capping an extended drive with a nine-yard rushing touchdown. ECU struggled to find momentum on its next possession and was forced to punt, but the Tigers' defense responded with a stop to give the offense another opportunity.

ECU put together a promising drive late in the quarter, moving into the red zone before a pass was intercepted at the SWOSU 15-yard line with 2:47 remaining. The turnover proved costly as time continued to wind down, but the Tiger defense forced a punt to give ECU one final opportunity.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, Sergio Kennedy connected with Jonathan Brown for a 47-yard touchdown, bringing the Tigers within two points at 23-21 with 1:47 remaining. ECU attempted an onside kick to regain possession, but SWOSU recovered and ran out the clock to secure the win.

Despite the result, ECU finished with 422 yards of total offense, outgaining SWOSU's 357 yards. The Tigers totaled 159 rushing yards on 26 attempts, averaging 6.1 yards per carry, and added 263 passing yards. Kennedy threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, while Brown's late scoring reception kept ECU within striking distance.

Penalties and possession time proved costly, however, as ECU was flagged 11 times for 124 yards compared to just three penalties for 15 yards by SWOSU. The Bulldogs also controlled possession for 33:04, more than six minutes longer than the Tigers, and converted all three of their red-zone opportunities into points.

On the ground, Quincy Thompson led the Tigers with 89 rushing yards on 15 carries, adding a touchdown in the opening quarter, while Sergio Kennedy contributed 62 yards on seven attempts. Through the air, Jonathan Brown paced ECU's receiving corps with nine catches for 127 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter. Austin Bowen added three receptions for 50 yards, highlighted by a 47-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.

Defensively, Caden Pickens led the Tigers with an imressive 18 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry. Justin McCray added eight tackles, while Treveon Tutt recorded eight tackles, including one tackle for loss and a sack. Nathaniel Rainey also contributed eight tackles and a pass breakup, while Amin White added two pass breakups.
