NEW ORLEANS — East Central University sophomore standout Joyce Kemboi added another historic accomplishment to her record-breaking season Monday, as she was named the NCAA Division II Women's Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The national honor comes after Kemboi delivered a historic performance Saturday at the Chile Pepper Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas, where she shattered her own East Central women's cross country 5K record with a time of 16:09.7.

Kemboi's performance not only stands as the fastest 5K in ECU women's cross country history, but it is also the fastest 5K time in NCAA Division II this season by 14.1 seconds.

The record-breaking performance marks a remarkable progression for Kemboi, who first established herself as the fastest 5K runner in program history at the Aggie Duels on Sept. 6. Her latest performance was nearly a full minute faster than the time she posted in that initial record-setting race.

With the national recognition, Kemboi becomes the first Tiger in East Central women's cross country history to earn USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors.

Kemboi's historic start to the season has continued to elevate the Tigers on the national stage, as her performances have established her as one of the top distance runners in NCAA Division II.
