No. 5 Men’s Basketball Season Ends in GAC Quarterfinal Loss to No. 4 SNU

FORT SMITH, Ark. – The No. 5 seed East Central University men's basketball team saw its postseason run come to an end Friday afternoon, falling 89–65 to No. 4 seed Southern Nazarene University in the quarterfinals of the Great American Conference Tournament at Northside Arena in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Despite the loss, ECU's appearance in the GAC Championship Tournament marks a return to postseason play for the first time since the 2022–23 season. The Tigers conclude the year with a 15–14 overall record and a 10–12 mark in conference play, matching the program's best finish since in three seasons.

The Tigers kept pace early in the contest, battling the Crimson Storm through much of the opening half. ECU trailed 14–9 before a layup from Jaden Miller ignited a 7–0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Jordan England that gave the Tigers a 16–14 advantage. A three-pointer from Rustin Coffey later pushed ECU's lead to its largest of the half at 30–25, but momentum quickly shifted in Southern Nazarene's favor. The Crimson Storm closed the half on a 16–0 run while holding the Tigers scoreless down the stretch, turning the deficit into a 41–30 halftime lead.

Southern Nazarene continued to build on that momentum coming out of the break, steadily extending the margin throughout the second half while maintaining control offensively. The Crimson Storm stayed hot from both beyond the arc and inside the paint, outscoring the Tigers 48–35 over the final 20 minutes to secure the 89–65 victory.

ECU shot 55.8 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range, but SNU matched that efficiency while taking advantage of additional opportunities. The Crimson Storm shot 60.7 percent overall and 50.0 percent from beyond the arc (11-22) while also holding advantages in rebounds (29–20), points in the paint (46–34), points off turnovers (19–6), and bench scoring (34–21).

Brandon Mann led the Tigers with 15 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting performance while adding two assists. Jaden Miller followed with 12 points and five rebounds while dishing out a team-high five assists. Kameron Newsome also chipped in 12 points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting, including two three-pointers, while Javaun Henderson added nine points.

With 232 assists this season, Jaden Miller not only set the ECU single-season record by a margin of 76, but also leads all active Division II players in assists and assists per game (8.6), highlighting his impact on the court.
