FORT SMITH, Ark. – The No. 7 seed East Central University women's basketball team saw its season come to a heartbreaking end Thursday afternoon, falling 66–65 to No. 2 seed Northwestern Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals of the Great American Conference Tournament at Northside Arena in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
In a game that remained tight from start to finish, the Rangers secured the win at the free-throw line in the final second, narrowly edging the Tigers after four quarters of physical, hard-fought basketball.
ECU concludes the season with a 15–12 overall record and an 11–11 mark in GAC play, marking the program's best finish since the 2021–22 season.
The two teams battled evenly throughout the opening quarter, with both sides scoring 12 points to open the contest. Northwestern gained momentum in the second period, though, outscoring the Tigers 22–14 to take a 34–26 lead into halftime.
ECU responded out of the break with its strongest stretch of the game.
Rylie Burnett opened the half with a jumper before three-pointers from
Jayden Weiberg and
Makenzy Herman sparked momentum and cut the deficit to five at 39–34. Weiberg later knocked down another three, while
Tatum Havens added one of her own to help the Tigers reclaim the lead at 40–39. ECU outscored the Rangers 20–11 in the third quarter to erase the halftime deficit and take a narrow 46–45 advantage into the final period.
Both teams traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter, with ECU continuing to battle and keep the game within a single possession. The score was tied five times in the closing minutes, including a 65–65 deadlock with 12 seconds remaining and the Tigers holding the ball with a chance to either score the go-ahead basket or force overtime. However, a late turnover and foul sent Northwestern to the free-throw line in the final second. The Rangers missed the first attempt but converted the second to secure the one-point victory.
ECU turned in an efficient offensive performance, shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from three-point range, compared to Northwestern Oklahoma State's 36.7 percent overall and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc. However, the Rangers held advantages in rebounding (33–31), points in the paint (30–18), second-chance points (14–1), and points off turnovers (12–5). Northwestern also reached the free-throw line more frequently, converting 17-of-23 attempts compared to ECU's 13-of-16, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the one-point game.
Rylie Burnett paced ECU with 16 points and eight assists, finishing a perfect 10-for-10 at the free-throw line.
Jayden Weiberg added 15 points, going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc, while
Katie Edelen contributed 15 points and six rebounds. Weiberg's 59 three-pointers this season rank fifth in the ECU single-season record book and bring her career total to 138, good for fourth all-time. Her .480 three-point percentage this season currently leads all of NCAA Division II.
Despite the loss, the Tigers' appearance in the GAC Championship Tournament and 15-win season marks a significant step forward for the program, posting its strongest performance in the
Heather Hurt era and closing the year with momentum for the future.
