ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The East Central University football team opened the 2026 season in thrilling fashion Thursday night, as the Orange Tigers went on the road and knocked off No. 20 Ouachita Baptist University, 27-17, under the lights at Cliff Harris Stadium.
ECU scored in every quarter and held off the nationally ranked Purple Tigers to open the season 1-0, marking the second consecutive season the Tigers have defeated Ouachita Baptist. ECU previously outlasted the Purple Tigers, 24-22, at Koi Ishto Stadium in Ada during the 2025 season.
The victory also snapped Ouachita Baptist's 18-game home-opening winning streak, giving the Tigers a statement win on the road against a nationally ranked opponent.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard first, with
Gabriel Ogura connecting on a 41-yard field goal with 8:56 remaining in the opening quarter to give ECU an early 3-0 lead. Ouachita Baptist answered with a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead before adding a field goal with 1:05 remaining in the quarter to push its advantage to 10-3.
ECU responded in the second quarter, as Ogura connected on a 28-yard field goal with 6:06 remaining to cut the deficit to 10-6. The Tigers then reclaimed the lead with 1:18 remaining before halftime when
Sergio Kennedy connected with
Xavier Gordon for a 15-yard touchdown. Ogura's extra point gave ECU a 13-10 advantage heading into the break.
The Orange Tigers continued to extend their lead in the third quarter, putting together an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ended with
Kaden Jones finding the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown run. ECU carried a 19-10 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Kennedy then delivered a pivotal play early in the fourth, breaking loose for a 52-yard touchdown run with 10:44 remaining. The Tigers followed with a successful two-point conversion, with Kennedy connecting with Jones to push ECU's lead to 27-10.
Ouachita Baptist answered with a touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-17 in the fourth, but the ECU defense continued to come up with big stops to keep the Purple Tigers from mounting a late comeback.
The biggest stop came in the closing minutes, when Ouachita Baptist faced fourth-and-one from the ECU 2-yard line.
Daniel Obinna-Kanu and the Tigers' defense stuffed the run for no gain, forcing a turnover on downs and giving ECU possession. The Tigers then ran out the clock to secure the 27-17 road victory.
ECU controlled the game offensively throughout the night, racking up 429 yards of total offense on 68 plays while averaging 6.3 yards per play. The Tigers also held a significant advantage in time of possession, controlling the ball for 37:15 compared to 22:45 for Ouachita Baptist.
The ECU defense played an equally important role in the victory, forcing three fumbles while limiting the Purple Tigers to 260 yards of total offense. The Tigers also protected the football, losing none of their lone fumble on the night.
Kennedy turned in a standout performance in the season opener, making an impact both through the air and on the ground. He completed 18-of-27 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown while adding 111 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. His 52-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter helped put the Tigers in control late.
Quincy Thompson also provided a strong performance on the ground, rushing 17 times for 102 yards while averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Thompson's longest run went for 42 yards as he helped pace the Tigers' rushing attack.
Gordon led ECU's receiving corps with three catches for 65 yards, including a 40-yard reception and a 15-yard touchdown. Jones added seven receptions for 56 yards.
Defensively,
Caden Pickens led the Tigers with nine total tackles, including 1.0 tackle for loss and a sack, while
Justin McCray added six tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
Elijah Simons also recorded six tackles, adding a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
Amin White contributed 1.0 tackle for loss, while
Tyques Miles added 1.0 tackle for loss and a forced fumble.
Jonah Espinosa,
Nathaniel Rainey and
Elyon White each recovered a fumble, while Pickens and
Tyler Masters recorded a quarterback hurry.
The Tigers' strong defensive effort, combined with a balanced offensive attack, helped ECU secure its first win of the 2026 season and its second straight victory over Ouachita Baptist.
ECU will return home to Ada next week for its 2026 home opener, hosting Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. at Koi Ishto Stadium.
