Fred Gaines joined the Tigers coaching staff for the 2014 season as the safeties coach after a standout two-year career for ECU as a defensive back.
In his senior season, Gaines earned All-Great American Conference First Team, Beyond Sports Network All-America Second Team and Don Hansen All-Super Region Three Third Team honors. He finished his 2013 season recording 54.5 (42-25) total tackles, six TFL, two interceptions and five pass breakups. Gaines had his best game of the year at Harding (Nov. 9) when his garnered 13.5 (11-5) total tackles, including five TFL (10 yards).
Before wearing a black and orange uniform, Gaines played at Fresno City College for two seasons. He helped the Rams to an 18-2 record in two years. He was also a standout at Chowchilla High School, where he helped the team to the Valley Championship in 2009.
The Fresno, Calif., native is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business at ECU.
