RUSSELLVILLE, ARK. – The East Central University football team moved its winning streak to four-straight games with a 15-0 shutout win against Arkansas Tech on the road in Great American Conference action.
The shutout win was the first for the Tigers (6-2, 6-2 GAC) since Sept. 25, 2010 when they defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State 23-0 at home and the first on the road since Sept. 7, 1991 with a 16-0 win at Tarleton State.
"We were very happy to get our program to six wins," said head coach
Tim McCarty. "I was very pleased with our defensive performance, and getting the shutout on the road was awesome. The GAC is such a competitive conference any win is big, but a win on the road is huge."
ECU's defense led the charge, allowing just 161 yards of total offense by the Wonder Boys (3-6, 3-5 GAC). This marked the second time this season that the Tigers held an opponent under 200 yards of total offense, with the other being 120 yards for Northwestern Oklahoma State. ECU has also held its opponents to under 275 yards of total offense in each of the last three outings.
The Tigers only allowed the Wonder Boys to get into the red zone twice in the game, with one resulting in a missed field goal in the first quarter the second a punt from the 20 in the second quarter.
Junior
Jameel Whitney led the Tigers' defense with 12 (6-6) total tackles, adding to his team leading tackle total. Senior
Daniel Holland had a solid performance for ECU, with four (2-2) total tackles, two quarterback hurries and 2.0 sacks for 18 yards.
The Tigers tallied a total of 4.0 sacks for 30 yards and 11.0 tackles-for-loss for 41 yards in the game, while allowing just 2.0 sacks (18 yards) and 7.0 (26 yards) TFL by ATU.
ECU recorded 341 yards of total offense for the game, with senior
JoJo Snell leading the charge with 135 all-purpose yards (109 rushing, 8 receiving, 18 kick return), with one touchdown. Junior Spencer bond went 15-of-32 passing for 165 yards and added 35 yards on the ground with one rushing TD.
The teams remained scoreless through the first half of action, but Snell scored what would become the game-winning TD less than three minutes into the second half.
After an opening drive by the Wonder Boys the resulted in a punt that was returned to the ECU 28, Snell took the ball on the second play of the drive and rushed for 72 yards to the end zone for the 0-6 lead at 12:24.
Redshirt sophomore
David Massuere added three more points in the third quarter with a 20-yard field goal at 4:40 for a 9-0 lead.
The final points came at 8:38 in the fourth quarter when Bond capped off a nine-play 48-yard drive with a one-yard rushing TD to the 15-0 final.
The Tigers will now return home for the final two games of the 2014 season, starting with a Saturday, Nov. 8 battle with Harding at 3 p.m. at Norris Field.
