Baseball Sweeps Games at Abilene Christian

Junior Casey Chenoweth was one of four players with two hits against Abilene Christian.
Box Score ABILENE, TEXAS – After having Saturday's game cancelled due to rain, the East Central University baseball team earned a 9-5 win over Abilene Christian to win the series 2-0.

The Tigers (13-10) were led by senior Josh Lavender with four RBIs and one hit.  Juniors Garrett Donohoe and Casey Chenoweth were two of four ECU players with two hits for the game, with Donohoe adding an RBI.

Senior Robert Buitrago started the game for the Tigers, throwing the first 4.1 innings and allowing four hits and zero runs, with one strikeout.  Junior Icezack Flemming threw the next 1.2 innings and added three strikeouts.  Junior Cam McKay earned the win, with one inning of work and one strikeout.

"I was really proud of my team," said head coach Dino Rosato.  "They really worked hard this weekend to earn some good wins."

ECU was the first to put a number on the scoreboard, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth.  Junior Luc Pomales started things off with a one-out walk.  Senior Ethan Gold singled to short and Chenoweth was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Junior Andrew Ayrado then sent a home across the plate when he reached on catcher's interference.  Junior Ty Huie was hit to send in another run and Lavender earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center for the final run.

The Wildcats (7-10) answered an inning later, with one run in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-1 score.

The Tigers added a run in the top of the sixth.  Chenoweth doubled to right and Ayrado singled to center to put runners on the corners.  That allowed ECU to attempt the double steal, with Ayrado ending up out at second, but Chenoweth scoring for a 4-1 lead.

ACU responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-2 score.  The Wildcats added three runs an inning later to take a 4-5 advantage.

The Tigers came right back in the top of the eight with four runs to take a 9-5 lead.  Gold led off with a single and Chenoweth and Ayrado both reached on bunt singles to load the bases.  Huie earned an RBI when he drew a walk that also left the bases loaded.  Lavender broke opening the scoring with a three-run triple to center field.  The final run was scored by Donohoe, who hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Wildcats had runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to score for the 9-5 ECU win.

The Tigers will next travel o Shawnee, Okla., to face Oklahoma Baptist, Monday, March 17 at 6 p.m. at Ford Park.
