Football Suffers First Loss of Season at Ouachita Baptist

ARKADELPHIA, ARK. – The East Central University football team suffered its first loss of the season, 20-41, at Ouachita Baptist in Great American Conference action.

The Tigers (2-1, 2-1 GAC) were led on offense by sophomore David Moore, who scored three touchdowns on five catches and 94 yards.  Defensively junior Jameel Whitney led ECU with 10 total tackles (5-5).

Junior Spencer Bond finished the game 17-of-38 for 243 yards, but threw four interceptions and was sacked twice.

Like the previous two games of the season, ECU quickly fell behind.  This time it was a 0-14 deficit, as OBU (2-0, 2-0 GAC) scored on its first two possessions.

ECU cut the deficit in half, with 5:38 left in the first quarter, when Bond and Moore connected for the first of three TDs on the day.  This time it was a 12-yard pass that capped off an eight-play, 74 yard drive.

OBU quickly responded to increase the lead to 7-21 at 13:43 in the second quarter.

Just over two minutes later Bond and Moore connected again, this time with a 40-yard pass with 11:28 remaining in the half for a 14-21 score.

OBU added three more points before the end of the half on a 33-yard field goal to go into the intermission leading 14-24.

OBU was the first to strike in second half, with a TD with 5:43 left in the third to go up 14-31.

Bond and Moore added one more connection for a 34-yard touchdown with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter to make the score 20-31 after the extra point was missed.
OBU added 10 more points in the fourth quarter, on a TD and a field goal for the 20-41 final.

The Tigers will return home for a tough battle with No. 7 Henderson State, Saturday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. at Norris Field.  The game is the annual Pink Out game and will also feature a reunion for the 1984 team that finished 10-2 overall and won the first of four-straight Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference Championships.
