Baseball Drops Double-Header to Arkansas Tech

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. – After a week off the field, the East Central University baseball team dropped a double-header to Arkansas Tech at Putnam City High School field in Great American Conference action.  The Tigers (11-7, 7-4 GAC) fell 6-13 in game one and then 6-14 in game two.

ECU was led by senior Ariel Adut, with a .667 average, two hits, one double and two RBIs.  Senior Nick Spini added a .500 average on four hits and two doubles.

The Tigers will have little time to rest up, as they rescheduled their game against Oklahoma Christian for Monday, March 16 in Oklahoma City at 7 p.m.  ECU will also face Dallas Christian, Tuesday, March 17 at 2 p.m. at Ken Turner Field.

Game 1 – ATU 13, ECU 6
ECU came out ready to play after a week off and scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  After one out, senior Dustin Torres reached due to an error and was on base when senior Luc Pomales hit his third home run of the season over the right field fence.

The Wonder Boys (13-10, 3-5 GAC) countered with two runs in the top of the second to tie the score at two.

It didn't take long for the Tigers to take back the lead, as they tallied two runs in the bottom of the second for a 4-2 advantage.  Senior Cale Russell started the inning with a walk.  After the first out, junior Gavin Susca then sent Russell home with a double to the right center gap.  Senior Ty Huie kept things going with a bunt single toward third to move Susca to third.  That allowed Torres to earn an RBI when he grounded out to second.

ATU countered with four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-6 advantage.

The Tigers cut the deficit to one (5-6) with a walk from senior Casey Kenney, single by Susca and a field choice put runners on first and third with two outs.  Huie then stole second and Kenney was able to steal home for the run.
Pomales tied the game at six in the fifth inning, with his second home run of the day, this time to left field.

The Wonder Boys added three runs in the top of the sixth to regain the advantage, 6-9.  ATU added four more runs in the top of the ninth for a 6-13 win.

Game 2 – ATU 14, ECU 6
The Wonder Boys came out strong, scoring four runs in the first and one in the second for a 0-5 lead.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the second with three runs.  Senior Bryce McKee started the inning with a single to left and was sent to second when senior Garrett Donohoe walked.  Both runners were sent to scoring position when senior David Terrazas hit a sacrifice bunt.  The first two runs then scored on a double down the left field line.  The final run of the inning came when senior Ariel Adut doubled to right center.

ATU added four more runs to their total in the top of the third to make the score 3-9.  The Wonder Boys added three more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, to push the advantage to 3-13.

ECU made a push in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out run.  Senior Casey Chenoweth hit a triple to right center and was sent home when senior Ariel Adut singled to left.  However, that is all they could put across the plate.

The Wonder Boys had one more run in them, as they went up 4-14 in the top of the seventh.

The Tigers didn't go quietly in the seventh, scoring two for the 6-14 final.  Susca led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch.  That put him in scoring position when McKee hit a single up the middle.  Donohoe then drew a walk and a run was scored when Terrazas single to right field.
