Baseball Sweeps the Series Against Arlington Baptist

ADA – The East Central University baseball team made it a clean sweep of the series against Arlington Baptist, with 5-3 and 17-3 wins at Ken Turner Field in non-conference action.

The Tigers (15-10) were paced by senior Nick Spini in the double-header, with a .778 batting average, seven hits, four runs and five RBIs.  Spini's hits including three doubles.  Seniors Ariel Adut and Cale Russell both hit .571 for the day with four hits, with four more ECU batters hitting .500 for the day.

Senior Michael Andrade earned the win in the opening game, coming in and throwing two innings, allowing two hits and zero runs.  Junior Dylan Murphy picked up his first save of the season, throwing the final two innings and striking out two.

In the second game, senior Oscar Gomez moved to 4-0 on the season, throwing the first four innings.  He allowed four hits and three runs and struck out four.

The Tigers will now get ready for a five-game road trip starting, Tuesday, March 31 at St. Gregory's at 3 p.m.

Game 1 – ECU 5, Arlington Baptist 3
The Patriots (11-20) were the first to get on the scoreboard, taking a 0-1 lead after the third inning.

Arlington Baptist added a second run in the top of fifth on a home run for a 0-2 advantage.

The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 5-2 lead.  Sophomore Trevor Huie started the inning with a walk and was sent to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Dustin Torres.  Senior Ariel Adut scored the first run with a single up the middle and was then sent home himself with a double from senior Nick Spini.

Senior Garrett Donohoe was added to the bases with a single up the middle.  That allowed senior Dustin Torres to earn two RBIs with a single to right field that was mishandled by the right fielder.  Senior Cale Russell then drove in the final run of the inning with a double through the left side.

The Patriots got the bases loaded in the top of the ninth and scored one run, but the Tigers held on for a 5-3 win.

Game 2 – ECU 17, Arlington Baptist 3
The Patriots were the first to score, taking a 0-2 advantage.

However, the Tigers responded and in a big way, taking a 10-2 lead after the first inning.  ECU tallied nine hits in the inning, including two doubles.  The inning also saw two hits from Spini and Donohoe.

ECU kept the runs coming, with a one-run third inning.  Torres reached due to an error and was replaced on the base path by senior Eric Swann.  Adut pushed Swann to second with a walk and Swann was then sent home on a single by Spini for an 11-2 lead.

Arlington Baptist added a run in the fourth to cut the advantage to 11-3.

The Tigers again added multiple runs in the bottom of the fourth, moving the score to 16-3.  After the first out Terrazas singled up the middle and Russell reached on catcher's interference.  Senior Casey Chenoweth then hit into a fielder's choice leaving runners on first and second.  Trevor Huie singled down the right field line to score two runs and Swann followed with an RBI on a single to right field.

Adut and Spini kept the right fielder busy with singles of their own, with Spini earning and RBI.  The final run of the inning was scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers continued to build the lead with a run in the seventh, moving the score to 17-3.  Spini doubled to right center and was sent home on a single up the middle by Donohoe.
