LIVINGSTON, ALA. – The East Central University baseball team fell 4-6 to No. 9 West Alabama in non-conference action.
The Tigers (0-7) were led by junior
Riley Roberts, who tallied two hits and two RBIs. Junior
JT Stevenson added two more hits of ECU's nine in the game.
Sophomore
Kyle Britt threw the first five innings of the game, allowing eight hits and four runs, while recording four strikeouts. Junior
Jake Wellington ended the game for the Tigers, allowing two hits and two runs and earning three Ks.
ECU was the first to score a run, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. After the first out, Stevenson and junior
Thomas McGarry both singled. Junior
Trevor Huie then drew a walk to load the bases after the second out. Stevenson scored the run when a wild pitch was thrown.
The Tigers added to the lead in the second inning for a 2-0 score. Junior
Kaleb Matthews reached due to an error and was joined on base by sophomore
Austin LoBue who singled to left. Junior
Riley Roberts earned the RBI when he singled to left.
UWA (4-1) cut the lead into half in the bottom of the second with a single run.
ECU responded with a run in the third inning. Senior Kris Motler singled through the left side to start the inning and was sent to second on a sacrifice bunt by Huie. Redshirt junior
David Fernandez sent the run home with a triple to center field.
The teams held each other scoreless through the fourth inning. West Alabama then tied the game in the fifth with two runs and took a 3-4 lead with a run in the sixth.
UWA added two more runs in the seventh to lead 3-6.
The Tigers cut into the disadvantage with a run in the eighth. After the first out Matthews singled and advanced to second on an error. LoBue followed him on base due to a second error before the next out occurred. However, before the end of the inning Roberts singled up the middle to score a run and make it 4-6.
The teams held each other scoreless in the final inning for the 4-6 final.
The four-game series will wrap up Saturday, Feb. 13 with a double-header set to start at noon.
