SHAWNEE, OKLA. - In the first day of the Great American Conference/Mid America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Crossover, the East Central University volleyball team dropped two 0-3 matches. The Tigers (2-8) first fell to No. 14 Washburn (19-25, 15-25, 16-25) and then to Emporia State (14-25, 19-25, 18-25) at the Noble Complex.
ECU was led by juniors
Alex Campbell and
Kaci Harrison on offense. Campbell tallied 17 kills, while Harrison added 12 kills, four digs and three block assists. Junior
Taylor Turner tallied 45 assists and 16 digs, while junior
Lily Porsa garnered 43 digs for the day.
The Tigers will now head to Edmond, Okla., Saturday, Sept. 17 for the final two matches of the GAC/MIAA Crossover. The Tigers will face host No. 7 Central Oklahoma at 11 a.m. and then Pittsburg State at 3 p.m.
No. 14 Washburn 3, East Central 0
ECU came out strong at the start of set one, taking a 4-1 advantage before the Ichabods (7-2) picked up the tempo and tied the set at four. The teams traded the next 12 serves, for a 10-all tie, before a 6-0 run by Washburn gave them the lead for good and helped them claim the 19-25 win.
The second set was all Ichabods at the start, as they jumped out to a 0-7 advantage. Washburn didn't allow the Tigers to get closer than five the rest of the set on the way to the 14-25 win.
ECU kept the third set close at the start, but an 8-0 run in the middle by Washburn gave them the momentum and allowed them to claim the 16-25 victory.
Emporia State 3, East Central 0
The Hornets (7-3) started the opening set by taking a 0-4 advantage and never let the Tigers get more than one point in a row on the way to the 14-25 win.
The second set was much closer, as there were eight tie scores and four lead changes before a winner could be determined. ECU was trailing 7-12 when they started to push the tempo and tied the match at 15 and 16, with a 9-4 run. The teams remained close for the next few serves, but a late 5-0 run by ESU helped them gain the 19-25 win.
The third set started close, but a 4-0 run by the Hornets gave them the needed push to take a 3-6 advantage. ESU kept pushing the momentum throughout the set with several large runs and eventually earned the 14-25 win.
