Volleyball Splits Day One of GAC/MIAA Crossover

EDMOND, OKLA. – The East Central University volleyball team split in its matches in the first day of the GAC/MIAA Crossover.  The Tigers (4-7) first fell to UCO 3-0 (16-25, 15-25, 10-25) and then rebounded with a 3-0 win over Southwest Baptist (25-14, 25-20, 25-23).

ECU was paced by senior Alex Campbell, who tallied 18 kills, a .265 (18k-5e-49ta) hitting percentage, 11 digs and a block assists.  Junior Karina Erreguin adds 12 kills, three aces, eight digs and two block solos.

The Tigers will now head to Bethany, Okla. to finish up the tournament, with matches against Emporia State (12 p.m.) and Missouri Southern State (6 p.m.)

ECU 3, Southwest Baptist 0
ECU was led in the match by Campbell, with 13 kills, a .250 (13k-4e-36ta) hitting percentage and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.

The Tigers took an early 5-1 lead in the opening set to take control.  ECU kept pushing and used several small runs through the set and never let the Bearcats get more than three-points in a row to earn the 25-14 win.

Southwest Baptist took an early 4-2 lead in the second set, but the Tigers fought back and tied the set at five.  The teams traded serves until a 10-all tie.  That is when ECU took control and kept pushing the momentum until they earned the 25-20 win.

The third set was tight, with now team leading by more than two until a third of the way through.  That is when the Tigers used a 3-0 run to take the lead for good.  The teams battled again through the rest of the set, but ECU was able to hold on for the 25-23 win.

UCO 3, ECU 0
The Tigers struggled to get their offense going in the opening match of the day, falling to host UCO 3-0 (16-25, 15-25, 10-25).  ECU hit .079 (22k-15e-89ta) for the match, while the Bronchos hit .376 (48k-10e-101ta) for the day.

The teams traded the first four serves of the opening set, but then UCO went on a 4-0 run to take control of the match for good.  The Bronchos never led the Tigers get closer than two-points the rest of the set to earn the 16-25 win.

The second and third sets saw UCO jump out to an early lead for control and never let ECU get back in rhythm.
