WICHITA, Kan. – The East Central University women's basketball team opened the 2019 season at the Clarion Inn Invitational against Southwest Minnesota State. The Tigers (0-1) trailed by as many as 13, but got within one in the final two minutes, before falling 58-53.

- The Mustangs (1-0) were the first to score, hitting a triple 20 seconds in
- The Tigers got within one 37 seconds later, but that was as close as they would get
- SMSU pushed ahead by as many as 7 (6-13)
- ECU fought back to get within one again (12-13), with a 6-0 run, with 2:11 left
- The Mustangs finished the quarter with a 4-0 run
- Second Quarter: 13-14
- In the first 3:30, SMSU used a 5-3 run to push the lead back to 5
- The Mustangs led by as many as 9 the rest of the quarter
- Third Quarter: 13-19
- In the first minute, SMSU pushed the lead to double digits (25-35)
- Led by as many as 13 in the quarter
- Fourth Quarter: 15-8
- The Tigers went on a 6-0 run in the first 2:30 to cut the deficit to (44-50) six
- The Mustangs scored with 7:27 left in the stanza before both teams went cold
- ECU was the next to score, with 4:11 left on the clock
- The Tigers continued their run to 11-2 until 2:18 remained to cut the deficit to 1 (51-52)
- SMSU scored the next two points at the free throw line, with 2:04 remaining (51-54)
- The Mustangs followed with a 4-1 run to take control for good

- ECU shot 31.5 % (17-of-54) to a 26.2% (17-of-65) by SMSU
- The key difference in the game came with second-chance points
