ALVA, Okla. – The East Central University soccer team traveled to Alva, Oklahoma to face off against Northwestern Oklahoma State University in a GAC showdown, emerging victorious with a 1-0 win on Wednesday night at Ranger Soccer Field.
With the victory, ECU secures the series sweep over Northwestern and improves their GAC record to 3-4-1.
"It was a great win and shutout by the team on the road," Head Coach Alyssa Taramona said. "The girls found a way to put the ball in the back of the net early and stayed locked in defensively to secure the shutout. The biggest contributor to our success tonight was that we were a player-led team. The girls communicated at a high level and were able to hold each other responsible to our standards both on and off the field. I am proud of how this team continues to grow in their ability to lead themselves and each other in all aspects of the game."
Despite the Rangers holding a slight edge in shots, 14-13, and shots on goal, 9-8, the Tigers struck early, scoring just three minutes into the match and never looking back for a solid 1-0 shutout win.
Abbie Morris netted the Tigers' lone goal with a powerful header off a corner kick from
Paige Jones, marking her fourth goal of the season.
In the 90 minutes in goal, ECU goalkeeper
Madison Mayhall made nine crucial stops to keep the Rangers off the scoreboard.
The ECU soccer team will return to Ada for a match against Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 pm. Prior to kickoff, the team will honor their 2024 seniors.
