CAMERON, Okla. – The East Central University women's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Lawton, Okla., for a non-conference matchup with Cameron University and coming away with a 70–63 win on Saturday night.
ECU and Cameron traded early baskets, knotting the score at 2–2 before the Aggies edged ahead 8–4. Back-to-back threes from
Makenzy Herman pulled the Tigers within 11–10, but Cameron responded to push the margin to 14–11. A late layup by
Eva Fernandez kept ECU close as the Tigers ended the first quarter trailing 16–13.
Cameron extended its lead to 21–13 early in the second, but ECU quickly settled in. A three from
Jayden Weiberg and steady scoring from
Rylie Burnett and
Natalie Milwood kept the Tigers within striking distance. Burnett's transition three tied the game at 26–26, and after briefly falling behind again, ECU closed the half strong. Buckets from Burnett and Milwood sent the Tigers into the locker room with a 31–29 advantage.
The Aggies briefly regained the lead to open the third quarter, but ECU answered with baskets from
Katie Edelen and free throws by Fernandez to move ahead 37–35. Both teams exchanged runs throughout the frame, with ECU staying in front behind contributions from
Ella Lavigne and timely trips to the line. A late three from Weiberg and two free throws from Herman pushed the Tigers' lead to 49–45 heading into the fourth.
ECU took control early in the final period, getting layups from Fernandez and Milwood along with free throws from Burnett to build a double-digit cushion, stretching the lead to as many as 15 at 64–49. Cameron made a late push, but the Tigers stayed poised down the stretch to secure the victory.
Burnett powered the ECU offense with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting and a perfect 6-for-6 at the line. Herman added 10 points, knocking down 3-of-5 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, while Fernandez finished with 9. On the glass,
Claira Dannefer, Lavigne, and Milwood each pulled down six rebounds as ECU controlled the boards throughout the night.
