Softball Splits Double-Header at Southeastern

Sophomore Jordynn VanPelt tallied a .667 average against Southeastern, including a triple and home runs, with eight RBIs.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DURANT, OKLA. – The East Central University softball team split the first double-header of the season with arch rival Southeastern Oklahoma State.  The Lady Tigers (18-13, 10-8 GAC) first earned a 17-2 win in five innings, which broke an 11-game winning streak for the Savage Storm (21-8, 14-4 GAC).  ECU then fell 2-6 in the second game of the series.

ECU was led by sophomore Jordynn VanPelt, who hit .667 for the day, with four hits, including a triple and a home run.  VanPelt garnered eight RBIs and scored three times.  The Lady Tigers saw multiple hits for the day from a total of six players, with sophomore Leah Tigert also tallying four hits, with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Redshirt freshman Sydney Dow earned the win in the circle in the opening game, throwing four innings.  Dow allowed three hits and one run and tallied one strikeout.

The Lady Tigers will return home to Lady Tiger Field for the first time since March 1 when they host Arkansas-Monticello, March 28-29 for a four-game GAC series.  Double-headers are scheduled to start at 2 p.m., Friday, March 28 and noon, Saturday, March 29.

Game 1 – ECU 17, SEOSU 2
The Lady Tigers came out ready to fight in the top of the first, scoring two runs.  Sophomore Lauren Reeves tallied a single to left to put her on base when sophomore Leah Tigert hit a shot over the center field fence for the 2-0 advantage.

The Savage Storm scored their first run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 1-2.

However, ECU responded with six runs in both the third and fourth innings.

In the third, junior Lacey Williams earned a lead-off walk and was joined on base by Reeves and Tigert to load the bases.  Senior Gina Mengwasser earned an RBI by drawing a walk to leave the bases loaded.  Dow was also walked to score a run and VanPelt hit a grand slam to left field for an 8-1 advantage.

In the fourth, junior Chelsea Patterson earned a one-out single and was advanced to second with a single from Reeves.  Tigert earned an RBI with a single through the left side and VanPelt scored two runs with a single to left center.  Junior Samantha McGraw added two RBIs with a double and the final run was scored when Williams singled for a 14-1 lead.

The Tigers added three more runs in the top of the fifth.  Mengwasser reached on a fielder's choice and was advanced to second when freshman Nicole Nordie was hit by a pitch.  VanPelt added two more RBIs with a triple to right field and then scored the final run when she stole home for a 17-1 advantage.

Southeastern added one run in the bottom of the fifth for a 17-2 final, when the run-rule was activated.

Game 2 – SEOSU 6, ECU 2
The second game saw the Savage Storm come out strong, scoring a run in the bottom of the second.  SEOSU added three runs in the third and two in the fifth for a 0-6 lead.

The Savage Storm held the Lady Tigers scoreless until the top of the seventh when they scored two runs.  McGraw tallied a double down the left line that left her on base for Mengwasser, who hit a home run to left field for the 2-6 final.
