WICHITA, KAN. – The East Central University men's tennis team split two matches over the weekend, suffering a 2-7 loss to Rockhurst before rebounding for a 5-4 win over Newman.
In the first match of the weekend the Tigers (2-3) fell 2-7 to Rockhurst after falling behind 1-2 in doubles play. ECU's two points came from a win at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Freshman
Adria Abella and sophomore
Stefan Schodlbauer claimed a 9-8 (7-5) win over Nicolas Riveros and Decho Valev at No. 3 doubles and Schodlbauer then added an 8-4 win over Riveros at No. 6 singles.
In the second match of the weekend, ECU came out stronger and took a 2-0 lead after doubles. Senior
Max DeJuan and freshman
Marc Lerch defeated Alejandro Gonzalez and Diego Rojo Fernandez 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Schodlbauer and senior
Nate Kipping then combined for an 8-4 win over Zurab Tskhakaia and Jose Enrique Coiras at No. 3 doubles.
Abella then added a 6-1, 6-2 win over Fernandez at No. 5 singles and Schodlbauer defeated Coiras 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to put the match in reach. The match then came down to Lerch, who claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win over Freddy Sanchez at No. 4 singles.
The Jets then earned three three-set wins at No.1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles to end with the 5-4 scores.
The Tigers will now be idle until March 3 when they host Southeastern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. at Mayhue Courts.
