ADA – The East Central University men's women's tennis teams are preparing for their annual trip to Bentonville, Ark., to participate in the 2016 Great American Conference Championship Tournament, April 21-23.
2016 GAC Championship PageThe men's team drew the No. 4 seed this season and will face No. 1 Ouachita Baptist in the opening round, Friday, April 22 at 10:30 a.m. ECU finished the regular-season 8-11 overall and 1-3 in GAC action.
The Tigers are ranked No. 38 in the ITA national rankings and No. 7 in the Central Region. Sophomore
Sergio Espias is ranked No. 5 in singles action, with sophomore
Alex Fillat at the No. 7 spot. Espias has earned a 16-5 singles mark this season, while Fillat adds an 11-14 mark.
The women's team claimed the No. 3 seed and will start the tournament with a rematch of the final regular-season contest of 2016, facing No. 6 Southern Nazarene, Thursday, April 21 at 2 p.m. The Tigers currently have a 10-13 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the GAC for the season.
The ECU women claimed both the regular-season and GAC Championship titles a year ago, advancing to the NCAA Central Regional.
This season, the Tigers have been led by junior
Julia Municoy, who has a 15-8 record in singles and is currently ranked No. 18 in the ITA Central Region singles play.
The semifinals on the women's side are set to be played at 2 p.m., Friday, April 22. The championship matches for both sides will be Saturday, April 23, with the men starting at 10:30 a.m. and women at 2 p.m.
