BENTONVILLE, ARK. – The East Central University women's tennis team earned their first automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Central Regional by claiming the 2015 Great American Conference Championship with a 5-3 win over Southern Nazarene.
The Tigers (15-11) took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, giving them an edge in the first to five race. Senior
Bernardita Muscillo and freshman
Srijita Ghosh finished first with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles over Kaitlyn Atekeson and Taylor Sullivan.
No. 2 doubles was then claimed by the Crimson Storm (4-13) before senior
Elisabeth Dignard and sophomore
Julia Municoy earned a come-from behind 8-6 win over Masha Andrianova and Natalia Moreno at No. 1 doubles.
The Tigers quickly pushed the lead to 4-1 with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Freshman
Veronica Mijares first took a 6-0, 6-0 win over Taylor Sullivan at No. 6 singles. Ghosh then added a point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Kaitlyn Atkeson.
SNU cut the deficit to 4-2 with a win at No. 4 singles.
The match-winning point then came from sophomore
Julia Municoy at No. 1 singles, with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Masha Andrianova.
The Tigers will now have to wait until next week to find out what rank and where they will be in the NCAA Central Regional.
